Eight fingers plus thumbs for space, or so I thought. Trying and paying some attention to how I write, it turns out I mostly only use the two first fingers on each hand, plus the right little finger for shift. Except I just hit that period with the third finger on my right hand. And I apparently usually hit space with the right index finger, but occasionally with the left thumb. Seems to depend on preceeding letter. I don't seem to use the right thumb at all, nor the third and fourth fingers of the left hand. Except fourth finger for Ctrl.

Needless to say, I was never formally taught to typewrite. And of course, spelling suffers real bad from paying attention to how I write.

Interestingly, the letters in the middle of the keyboard are hit by either hand, apparently depending on surrounding letters. And there I wrote that 's' with the third left finger, despite that I usually use the second. In short, I type alot more oddly than I thought.

I type the usual 8 fingers way without watching much (learned it once). maybe I am not faster than someone typing with 2 fingers, but at least I have no stress doing this like those hyperactive 2-finger guys ;)

I think it all has to do with what you're used to. I type with 3 fingers and my thumb on my right hand, and all five on my left hand. I remember learning how to type correctly in junior high school, but then I just went back to the way I always typed. Dunno how many wpm I type though, never timed myself. Maybe I'll give it a try.

I also type the "official" way...My typing teacher would be proud  I remember taking his class because I needed an "elective" and typing sounding like a breeze, but this dude was a terror. Upon entering the class we had the first 3 days to figure out where the keys were and which fingers were the correct ones to use for each key. After that he had a peice of paper taped to the top of the typewriters, then when we placed our hands on the keyboard, we had to lay that paper on top of our hands and typed without being able to look at the keyboard <ugh> We were "docked" points for misspelling, looking down (paper or no) and other format mistakes. Needless to say I do the "offical" way, while looking at my monitor for fear my old typing teacher will haunt me if I look down ;)
