Ugh, where's my VICTORY MOVIE!

Ok, I've played two games, the first was a time victory. I figured I didn't deserve a movie for that. But then I won a space victory! A Civ space victory is the most important achievement in PC gaming! I want fireworks! I want a parade! Why does Civ ONE still have the most satisfying victory movie??

The game's design, for a vanilla unexpanded Civ, is nearly a masterpiece. Well done! Every gameplay choice is meaningful and fun.

But... I have to say the presentation is a little dull. Giant Death Robots are fun and they help some except the game is over before you get to use them. I'm still waiting for that version of civ that has a better 'history of the world' replay than Civ1, a better victory movie than Civ1, and better wonder movies than Civ2, all in one ultimate Civ. I even miss being able to construct the worlds ugliest palace. It's such a no brainer to go all out with these things, all it takes is a tiny bit of creativity and some funding. It would be so worth it!

Maybe I'm alone in this, but I prefer the voiceovers with the oil paintings to Civ4's victory movies. Some of the movies were pretty silly (Culture, Domination), and I got a more epic feel out of "tales of your culture will inspire through the ages" than a video of a city stuffed with statues.

It needs to be a big deal whatever it is. Civ1's space race cutscene was great. Victory movies can be silly, and some of them were in the series, but certainly good ones could be made.

It just feels like, "Congrats you win."

I feel like "heeey... I was just up for 34 hours straight beating your game... Where's my reward!"

It was shot dead and left in a ditch along with religion, corporations, spies, forest growth, end of game replays, barbarian animals, and flavor.

The "you beat me" video from the leaders is kinda cool I guess.

I miss the end of game review. They brought it back for Civ 4, but apparently changed their mind again.

And I really miss how you can't retire at any given time (first time in the history of civ for losing that too.

HannibalBarca go back to Civ IV and stop whining

I actually very much enjoy the paintings and the voice overs. Civ IV wonder movies were... quite lame in all honesty, and I very much prefer the Civ V ones.

Now I dunno about you, but I find that winning the game is infinitely more satisfying than the dinky little movie that went along with it... Really it is just a formality. I mean it's not like the movie mails you money or something. It's not like you haven't seen the movie before or you are surprised by the content of the movie...
In a game like Civilization, the idea that you need a small animation to get any kind of satisfaction out of a 10 hour long game is pretty... sad

Am I the only one who thinks that the "retire when ever I want" was a bit absurd? I mean srsly call me cheater but I can`t remember the last time I didn`t use the retire option before quiting for the day just to have a quick glimpse at the situation.

Also in my mind a graph(civ 3 style) is better then a "OH look my borders are shifting while I hover through the entire game lenght withing 20 seconds" .

If you want some endgame stats and data visualisation that can be sorted by variouse things like era, sertain time period, army, science etc etc I am all up for that but a stupid hover "movie" of the game is lame uninformative and I am glad they removed it as well as the retire option.

As for the end of game cutscene.I think that it is not needed. The current ones are a little bleak and unsatisfying BUT they are ok-ish for the job they do.Could be better no doubt but an entire cutscene is a waste of resources and time.

Certainly the game is satisfying, that's not the issue. The issue is that there is an opportunity at the moment of victory to really make an impression, and it's not just a formality if done well, it's what you remember most about the game 20 years later.

In Civ1, the victory process was like an ongoing celebration. There was the victory movie, then you got the score page and all of your citizens were posed in a big group picture, as if thanking you for being such a great ruler, then you got to replay history and see when the great turning points took place and see how civs you never met ended up extinct. (In Civ1 this was a bit better than Civ4, like all things it can be done well or done badly.) It was an imaginative feast, even though all of these things were drawn up very casually. If someone were to really give these elements an upgrade in priority, it would be something very special.

The intro movie to Civ5 was pretty darn good, and looked pretty high budget. If you could only have one or the other, would you prefer an intro movie or a couple of victory movies?

Seriously? All you remember from your victories is the victory movie at the end? You don't remember the games at all? The entire game has no impression, but the movie does? That same movie that all your games will have, and the games for all players have?
So if you go up to a friend to talk about your recent awesome civ game, are you both going to discuss "Yeah man, my spaceship shot into the air!" "Hell yeah man, mine did too! What a cool game!!!"

Question to anyone else... am I weird for actually remembering the game? I don't remember any victory movies... just the games... Is that wierd?

Actually, I haven't played Civ1 in at least 15 years, and yes the victory movie IS what I remember most. It was fun! I remember vaguely that if you put a musketman on a mountaintop nobody could knock him off of it. That's about all I remember from the gameplay specifics lol.

I miss that little slide show you got at the end of the game in civ4, was allways cool to see how everyone expanded their culture, slowly but surely creeping around the world untill it was totaly engulfed in it... Give that back!

And of course, the winning movies.. :(

I'm absolutely loving civ 5 but this is the biggest complaint I have. Historical graph, all the rivals' beaten up faces, how my empire started humble and became a giant nation, etc made the victory more satisfactory. At first I thought I misclicked somehow and skipped the victory page.

I'm frankly going to go outright and say that the lack of all those movies for wonders and endings didn't really affect me, but that palace creation feature in Civilization III, and things like that, should not be omitted. The thing is that Firaxis has done superb in getting players happy with features that require much effort, but the logical thing would also be to work on features that make people by nature happy and don't require that much effort, and sandbox features like the palace designing have always been proven time and time again to be relatively easy to make and generate some of the most positive responses because of its simplicity yet effectiveness, which, in this case, would be to allow the player more control over the character of his or her civilization. I don't believe it's right just to work smart rather than working hard. Working hard and smart, however, is what makes the best of a project.

I totally agree. The artwork is fantastic and I really enjoy it. Glad to see somebody else does. The wonder/victory videos were pretty terrible, I turned those off real quick. They were poorly animated, and after all, art like this can do far better than than any 3D rendition i've seen. At least at a reasonable price.

If forumers keep on asking for that there is a little hope it will be added.

Making a 1 minute movie it takes 10 minutes

I take it you've never made a one-minute movie of the quality we're talking about here. I'm thinking it's going to take a lot longer than ten minutes.

If you build it within pc graphic 3D animation it would take days but a movie taken from You Tube showing some kind of victory celebration it takes 10 minutes.

Wait, there's no reviewing the game after? That's probably my favorite part of Civ 4, the fact that I can go back and watch the map of all the HOF games!
That's really disappointing =(
