UK Politics VI - Will Britain Steir to Karmer Waters?

Landlord MPs were mostly the Tories. Of course, the Tories aren't mostly anything in Parliament now (except than mostly bonkers).

Mostly Tories by % doesn't mean other parties don't have any, nor that their impact on the party is nonexistent.

Indeed not. I'd very surprised if there were no landlord MPs, after all.

This was an interesting listen:

Wasn't aware of how bad the situation actually is in the UK.

It is a consequence of trying to combine a hyper competitive work environment and a comprehensive benefit system.

Those least competitive in the market get squeezed out and some never even get started.

I am a retired civil servant and I can remember what happened when I was employed.
People would criticise civil servants for taking more sick days than the private sector,
so organisations and HR managers would get set targets of reducing the % sick.

This was most easily achieved by looking at records, identifying those with high rates
of sickness and getting rid of them by disciplinary action and/or buying their exit.

And the people with higher rates of sickness were most often those with permanent
disabilities or ongoing health issues; all with great hypocrisy about seeking greater diversity.

Now the Labour party's policy of pushing up minimum wage and employers NI contribution
merely means that employers are under increased pressure to get greater productivity
out of lesser numbers and no doubt those with health disadvantages, or have child care
commitments that limit their ability to work unpaid and unrecorded overtime, will go first.

Bringing this briefly back to Skin, does an OBE come with any guaranteed income or one-off cash award? :)

No. You get bragging rights though, a medal and three letters you can add to your business card, suggesting you're just a bit better than the rest. :mischief:

If they have a seat in the Lords and actually show up each day, then yes. I've never heard of life peerages otherwise coming with pensions.

I thought that life peers automatically get a seat there - don't real peers, ie hereditary ones, get one?
Do they, moreover, need to be there literally "every day" so as to be paid for their highly useful services?

Talks over return of Parthenon marbles to Athens are ‘well advanced’

Talks concerning the Parthenon marbles between Athens and the British Museum are “well advanced”, the Guardian has learned, even if officials have decided the cultural row will be low on the agenda when the prime minister, Keir Starmer, meets his Greek counterpart on Tuesday.

The fate of the classical masterpieces, which caused a quarrel last year between Rishi Sunak and Kyriakos Mitsotakis, will not be actively raised by either side when the two leaders hold their first Downing Street discussions. Starmer’s spokesperson said on Monday: “Our position on the Elgin marbles has not changed.”

But sources have said that talks between the Greek foreign ministry and George Osborne, the chair of the British Museum, are moving towards “an agreement in principle” to reunify the antiquities in Athens.

“The mood music has completely changed,” said one source close to the negotiations.

It is envisaged that any agreement will be underpinned by a cultural partnership between the two countries, with the sculptures returned to Athens and reunited with other pieces currently on display at the Parthenon galleries of the Acropolis Museum – in exchange for blockbuster art works that will take centre stage in rolling exhibitions in London.

In September, barely two months after Labour’s electoral victory, Giorgos Gerapetritis, the Greek foreign minister, told the Guardian he believed a deal was “relatively close”. Negotiations between Athens and the British Museum began in 2021.

Describing the discussions as both “frank and open” Gerapetritis said: “There is a common understanding as to how we can structure our partnership and I think with the new Labour government we will have a better opportunity to actually conclude the agreement because it will not oppose an agreement that is reached between the Greek government and the British Museum. There is a critical mass of political will.”

With the contours of a deal already outlined, negotiations are now focused on practicalities including the unprecedented step of transporting such priceless treasures from Britain to Greece, sources said.

Only certain hereditary peers get a seat, due to the reforms that New Labour made. I think life peers all get a seat, but many of them don't use them, except on special occasions, like when Andrew Lloyd-Webber shamelessly flew back to oppose some motion or other.

The marble deal is a sham, of course. Afaik it involves sending other important pieces to the British Museum, and the relocation is not permanent.
With the clowns we have as government, who knows, maybe you will even see the bronze statue of Poseidon in London :p

But hey, at least the British didn't murder tens of Greeks while they were stealing those marbles - unlike what the French did with the Winged Nike.

^ It's not really about the Marbles; it's setting a precedent that spooks the British Government. British museums probably sit on thousands of items, that were 'obtained' through questionable means and brought to the UK from around the World.

They won't give those two caryatid statues back forever -or the rest-, and they will get pieces as ransom for the limited time they send them here.
It's a stupid deal, of no virtue, and not a positive precedent.

It would have been important, if they had agreed to return them. Now it's just a show, for both sides and stupid or casually interested people in both countries - imo.
