UK Politics VI - Will Britain Steir to Karmer Waters?

A couple on interesting polls out over the weekend.

A FindOutNow poll with Reform on 26%, the Tories on 23% and Labour on 22%.
Hardly surprising.

Another poll has it that British voters might not actually like Trump much but we do in fact back many of his policies.

Opinium, the polling company behind the survey, said the findings indicated that British politicians should look at “taking a page from [Mr Trump’s] playbook”.

In the survey, 2,000 voters were asked what they thought of the US president’s agenda on reducing migration, the environment and diversity, but were not told that they were Mr Trump’s policies.

Illegal immigration and deportations
We will declare a national emergency in the Channel and we will begin the process of returning thousands and thousands of criminal migrants back to the places from which they came. Agree 58% Disagree 25%

Trade protectionism
We will immediately begin the overhaul of our trade system to protect UK workers and families. Instead of taxing our citizens to enrich other countries, we will tariff and tax foreign countries to enrich our citizens. Agree 56% Disagree 23%

Merit-based, colour-blind society
We will end the government policy of trying to socially engineer ethnicity and gender into every aspect of public and private life. We will forge a society that is colour-blind and merit-based. Agree 53% Disagree 23%

Energy independence and inflation
We will bring prices down, fill our gas reserves up again, and export British energy all over the world. We will be a rich nation again. We will defeat what was record inflation. Agree 55% Disagree 26%

Restore free speech
After years and years of efforts to restrict free expression, we will immediately stop all government censorship and bring back free speech. Agree 53% Disagree 26%

Studies have also show that people often vote for quite the wrong party to their actual beliefs, e.g. people tend to strongly support Green policies, but never vote for the actual party.

One wonders whether the poll was primarily of daily telegraph readers.

Having said that I have IRL heard non right wing people supporting Trumpist policies.

Likewise I heard many non lefties supporting the also generally rubbished Jeremy Corbyn policies.

The "How" is "Implementation" not "Policy".

The reason people who support Green policies don't vote green is, as you know, because
in a FPTP election most people choose from what they consider are likely winners.

In FPTP, of course, but it also applies to people who just tick a box out of tribal loyalty, when instead they would be better off actually checking other parties' policies.

Hatred of police not racism motivated children in English riots

A deep distrust of the police and a lack of youth opportunities fuelled the involvement of hundreds of “disempowered” children in last year’s riots across England, a report has found.

De Souza, whose team interviewed 14 children charged in relation to the riots, said the false claims spread by far-right influencers “played a potential role” but did not drive their actions.

None of those interviewed claimed they were motivated by anti-immigration, racist or far-right beliefs, with several expressing their dislike of these types of views. Rather, they were driven by anti-police feelings and a lack of youth activities and job opportunities, according to De Souza.

One of the children charged said they joined a riot after hearing that the police would be there. They said: “We went down to see what it was. There’s a tradition in [my city] of people versus police. We had an opportunity.”

Our Chancellor Rachel Reeves is backing a third runway at Heathrow airport.

It is quite amazing watching the contradictions.

On the one hand bringing forward the date to end the production of fossil fueled cars to save the environment,
while on the other hand backing the building of extra capacity for more planes that will burn more fossil fuels.

My interpretation is it shows who they fear.

I suppose the same should go for Mandelson, future (?) ambassador to the US, now trying to claim Donald Trump is not a bully.

Hey, I'm posting in the right thread for once!

Spokesperson for the UKIP Calvin Robinson made a gesture that looked like the Nazi salute at a anti-abortion conference, which led the editiorial staff at his site "God is a Geek" to leave in protest and him getting defrocked by the Anglican Catholic Church.

What a nice fellow he seems to be.

His Wikipedia page says that he's worked for three different churches in the UK and US.

It seems that the Labour government is quite susceptible to manipulation by particular business interests.

One might have thought that a more prudent chancellor would have permitted public due diligence on the business case before rushing to declare a decision.

Not quite; because the overall figure totals from which I listed the %s above, include
those who say that they won't vote and those who don't know who they will vote for.
