In a coupla weeks time I'm going to a mock UN conference in the town hall. A 'delegate' from each college in the region goes and represents a country and its vies at the conference. I have to represt Germany and I have to give a talk about the German policy towards AIDS both foreign and domestic and the german policies towards combating global poverty - since I know nothing about this its going to be a lot of work finding stuff out: i was wondering whether any of you know about or have opinions on either Germany's policies areas or UNAIDS
Anything would be appreciated.

(incidentally Im seeing a depressing amount of support for my maps thread: come on if lots of people post in there the can't ban us all :))

Yeah, the UN is a big joke. When you go for the mock confrence, focus heavily on the mocking, because that's all the United Nations is good for.

And to give numbers. Just today I've heard a Palestinian interviewed on TV complaining about Israel not listening to the decision of the UN security council (The one our good friend Syria is in) 242. Or was it P2P? Can't remember.
It's also good for absurds. They got a nobel prize in a year that they didn't solve a single conflict. Or like the Durban absurd.

You don't need to worry about communist spies infiltrating the United States government anymore.

They become UN delegates.

Come on guys...why don't you say something useful??? I don't want to have to get midevil on your asses like I did that time in March!!! (Of course....most of you never witnessed that. ;))

This could be a very fruitful discussion...and you guys are commenting from the peanut gallery and I'm sick of it!!!

Now...stay on topic or get banned. Your choice!!!

Now....I went to the model UN 2 years ago. I was the Argentinian Representive on the subject of old age. When old age is? What each country should do? Etc??? I did get the boring topic (I wanted weapons of mass destruction...but...ehhhh.) You would have thought anything on old age would have passed, I mean...it's so cut and dry....but ours was the only motion that failed!!! I was sooooo pissed. Those damn Africian countries banned against the Western World. Their main argument was that most people in their country doesn't live to 65 (The age we defined as old age) so they cancelled the whole proposal. What they failed to realize is that the higher the age...the LESS they have to do. They should have been happy that they wouldn't have to pamper the old folks!!! But they were from Prince of Whales....stupid ignorant snobs. (The "rich" peoples school ;))

P.S. It was an honor to be chosen by the school. You shouldn't treat it so lightly....

I am not up on that particular area of German policy, particularly as it pertains to the UN. But here is a good UN link I use to see things from the UN's perspective:

Ahh, the joys of Model UN.

Where else can I one week be Israel, asking Egypt to let me use the Suez Canal? And the next week, I can be Iran, continually condemning the Zionist entity. :goodjob:

As for research, do check out the UN site. They have a search engine, so try searches like "Germany, AIDS". ;)

Also, check out your government's website.

If really want to work, go to your library and check out a few books on your subject for the background info. I did this when playing Israel as Historical Security Council Member in 1956. (Read up on the Sinai crisis).

And if all else fails.

BS!!!!!!

I am not exactly sure what's that supposed to mean. Is it sarcasm?
Anyway, you guys are lucky. I didn't even hear of anything remotely like a model UN when I was in school. :(

Hey, speaking from experience, Iran is fun. You get to be a total bastard to the Western Imperialist scum and their Zionist lapdogs. The role-playing is fun, since it is such a different perspective. Especially organizing an Islamic alliance to call for UN peacekeepers in Israel. :p

I'm not sure what this refers to.... you might want to post the link to the thread, Graeme.

BTW, it was nice of you to remove some of your Spam, Sixchan, particularly what you posted that caused Cornmaster to have to make his post. But now that your ofending post is gone, Cornmaster's post looks like it applies to the one that is before it, by rmsharpe. The best etiquette would have been to edit your Spam and replace it with something like "EDIT: Apologies to Cornmaster. Spam removed.". Then it would give the right context to readers. But no worries this time. Here was what you posted that make Cornmaster write what he did:
