Please help.

I wish to declare war on an AI player, but each time I try to do so, I am unable. In the current deals section of our diplomacy screen, I have Peace Treaty(10 turns) which NEVER gets any shorter.

My tactic was going to be to strike before he developed gunpowder, but it looks like now I won't be able to do so.

Any suggestions as to how this condition came about, and how I can end it?

First, welcome to the forums! Second, what version of civ are you playing? Vanilla, warlords, or BTS. I can tell you that in Vanilla/Warlords, the shown turn count required for peace treaty will not get shorter even though the game mechanics will lower. In other words, the AI is counting down the turns although it won't show you in the active trades screen.

I have no knowledge of whether this has changed in BTS although I will next week! :)

Thanks for the prompt and friendly response.

I'm playing BTS. This is a really annoying problem, as the AI foe has just started building Janisseries. I was about to pounce when... agh! no dice!

Trouble is, I don't remember signing any kind of peace treaty with him. Obviously I must have done so several hundred years ago (we're near neighbours and haven't gone to war yet; indeed we shared open borders until I cancelled them just now).

So the treaty must be rolling - in which case, how do I stop it?

oooh.. i don't know, man. If you never were at war, this Peace treaty sounds like a bug. I know Firaxis released a patch almost immediately after BTS came out. Do you have it? Other than that, my help ends here since I don't have BTS. Sorry I couldn't help more.

You simply mouse over the treaty. It either says "This treaty can be broken in xx turns" or "Click here ot break this treaty" - if the second is the case, click and your peace-ensurance will end. you can now DoW them.

BtS was changed so that complying with an AI request (for a tribute, tech, conversion, etc.) automatically invokes a 10-turn peace treaty with that AI. I think the underlying idea is that the AI is saying "Thanks, in return we'll let you live for 10 more turns." :)

Wow. BTS is close to being an entirely different game (besides basic game mechanics/graphics). I MUST get my hands on this!!! You can break treaties? Can you break UN Resolutions? Can you defy the world community? Does this incite war more often? I'm curious!

Yes, BtS is indeed an incredible and greatly improved game :). I don't think you can break treaties, but you can now "veto" UN Resolutions (at the cost of unhappiness in your cities and diplomatic penalties), use the Apostolic Palace (similar in mechanism to the UN) to start or terminate wars, etc. I can't really speak to whether it incites war more often, since I've only played one game so far, but it definitely makes things more fun!

Ah, I re-read the post that made me think you could break treaties. You can do this once the 10 turns is over lol. Still, all these improvements sound amazing. Tell me, can the AI trade techs that it traded to get?

Awesome. I've been waiting for that. Can't stand when a friendly civ asks me for Military tech help and then trades it to my enemy. i really really hated that.

Exactly. It works both ways, so don't give him any gifts (though I don't see why you would) or demand tributes for 10 turns and everything should be OK.

LOL!

Panic over guys - thanks for the contributions.

I demanded tribute from him in an effort to encourage him to declare war on ME!!

He coughed up, so my hands were tied. Guess that's only fair. In a way...

That'll teach you to be a greedy bully.

Actually this happened to me too when I first played BTS, so I can hardly talk. I never knew why until I read this thread. Nice one!
