I just got Pirates and it installed fine but when i go to run the game it says "Unable to initialize DirectX" and tells me to go to the readme for help. I've followed all the guidelines listed in the readme but it still doesn't work. I've run it in safe mode, updated my video drivers and downloaded DirectX 9c again and again. I think it's my crappy video card but i don't know. I have a Intel(r) 82810E Graphics Controller that came with the computer. What sucks even more is that i've played the game before (not on my computer) and i know how fun it is! Please help me play.

Just got he game. Decided to move beyond Civ II and III. I get the same message "Unable to initialize DirectX". Did you find a fix?

It's a bug with DirectX9.0b.
If you have it installed, you can't install DirectX9.0c.
I fixed it by reformatting my computer.

Well that sucks. I'm having the same trouble...is there any way to fix the DirectX bug without reformatting? I'm getting kinda sick of having to do that as often as I do for one reason or another...

Well the good news is that DirectX problems don't come from Firaxis.
They are entirely born from Microsoft.
