Dear Firaxis,

From what I've seen on YouTube videos so far, you are not able to rename cities in the game; given that civ 6 didn't have this feature at launch I was afraid this would happen again, especially since in 7 you switch civs I was hoping you could manually update names to reflect the change in civ (i.e. "Londonium" -> "Lunden").

I know we are 3 weeks out and probably the game has shipped physical copies to implement any kind of real change is improbable rn, but can we at least get a commitment that this feature will be added in the first patch like civ 6? So long as this is on the radar and not lost to technical debt I'll be happy.

@FXS_Sar or anyone who can comment on this, it would be greatly appreciated
I've made the same petition on Reddit here

Signed.

I’ll go one step further than that, and also request the ability to rename the civ you transition into. Or add a feature that allows you to better blend the names of the civs you chose.

I like the civ-switching mechanically, but it feels awkward that your civ is pretty much losing your linguistic roots after transition - which I think adds to the displeasure that many folks have about it. You can give non-controversial explanations for Shawnee>America all you can, but they become so much less believable when your people abandon the native language and start naming everything in American English. The current city naming process doesn’t make me feel like the original civ’s culture is peacefully merging with the new one, but rather that the new one has completely taken over. As much as we remind ourselves that Civ is not real history, it’s hard to shake off certain perceptions from the latter. Otherwise we’d be have no issue adding Hitler as a leader, because hey he can pick Democracy in your playthrough and befriend all his neighbors.

I get that “history is built in layers”, but would appreciate it if FXS allowed players to decide for themselves where and how such layers are reflected in their playthrough.

Its so weird cause you can name your own religion in the game, but why not cities? I know people have mentioned it might be a complication with renaming cities that become your new capital in the age transition, but I still don't understand how this feature gets overlooked...

Oh, finally a poll so well designed with so detailed options that I can't even decide which one to pick between two.... jokes aside, and while not as desperate for it as thread creator, I also hope it is implemented in the near future.
lol I am desperate for this :crazyeye:, I did the same thing for Victoria 3...

Full agreement. It's a small thing, but something I have always enjoyed, and probably more important than ever in this iteration of Civ.

Second poll option should have been "pretty please."

And maybe a third option "pretty please with sugar on top."

I'm in full agreement with the sentiment. How have we had it confirmed that cities are un-re-namable? (i.e. in which of the reviewers' You Tubes does that come up?)

With a cherry on top

I just went and edited my post, Mudkip, but I know it as "sugar."

From my knowledge, there are YouTubers that rename cities pretty often (same goes to rock bands).
So I do agree, renaming cities is a big thing.

Sometimes I do it but likely different than most people here. Sometimes I pick some fiction world as a theme and start naming my cities related with that (like Lord of the Ring names, etc).

By the way, hopefully at some point they allow us to name the commanders units, as they seems to be a type of unit you won't end up having too many in a playthrough, and they even respawn / can be rebuilt if you lose them, so probably would be useful even if you just rename so you remember which is which / with which promotions so far. not for people like me to rename them things like Aragorn and Gandalf
