Oy, did this turn out badly.

I've been playing BTS for about three years now, and since sleep is impossible this evening, I had another go at Deity (my second). I lasted all of 20 minutes. Rather depressing, actually. :(

I usually play at Monarch these days, and I have about a 50/50 win loss ratio, but the problem is that I'm getting a little bored with it. I took a long holiday (for me, anyway) from Civ, whilst improving my domestic life, and I don't seem to have the fire that I once had for it. I've tried a few mods, but that really isn't the problem for me. I'm challenged enough at Monarch, so I don't think that I need to move up...

I don't know. What you some of you do to make the game fresh and challenging now and then?

I hear there's that mod called BAT that really improves the core game. You should try it :D

In seriousness though (wait...what!...seriousness and LM), I recommend spending more time on the S&T forum. Part of what makes the game exciting for me is trying to become a better player. Deity is arse hard - I win on that level very infrequently, but IMM is a reasonable goal to attain, and the S&T forum can get you there.

Try some of the forum games and series over there for a different mix. Also, the GOTMs are a blast and the staff over there come up with some very cool scenarios. Lastly, you may want to give the SGOTMs a try as well. There is a new game starting up and it's always nice to have more females around, especially ones with a great sense of humor. (even if most females are legally insane )

Hmm... well, I like playing Earth maps, and role-playing a little with the civs that I pick. For example, I'll be playing as the Byzantines later, and will attempt to reform the Roman Empire. Should be fun to try. :)

I take breaks between civving now. For a while I was getting burned out on it, but sitting back and doing other things makes me happy to start up a game when I am in the mood.

By the way, I've been playing Civ4 since 2005, and I've just now reached noble difficulty. :P Heh. But it's been a great journey.

Do you MP any? I remember MPing with Civ3, and being part of a ladder-style tournament. It was pretty cool. I remember rising in rank and I felt good. Does Civ4 have something like that?

Now, with all of that being said, real life always takes precedence. If Civ4 isn't doing it for you anymore, there are plenty of things out there that will. :)

Do you really sell lemons? :p

lemme get this straight. your in rio with the most awesome woman ever and you don't have anythig bether to do than play civ? and thebn post about it? i'm gonna call andie's cell and have her give you a slap upside the head. lymonds right you are nuts:cool:

You could try some of the scenario-like mods, where you have puzzle-like tasks to accomplish and new things to learn. Like the mongol scenario, the Romance of 3 kingdoms mod or RFC.

RFC (get latest patch) is definitely a nice change of pace

If you want to improve drastically at this game, we'll see you over at strategy & tips with detailed reports .

However, if you're just looking for fun you can try anything from betterAI to star trek to another game entirely. Certainly, jumping from monarch -----> deity won't end well for almost anybody (the different between immortal and deity is similar from going noble -----> immortal!) and deity requires fairly tight understanding of micro optimization or at least hueristics that get close and heaps of AI manipulation.

You could always try my cheese win at deity strategy!

If I can win so can you Lemon!

Trying for a culture win on deity can be fun at quick speed as well (probably best to turn off barbs and huts though, and pick your opponents). Never managed to pull it off yet, but in one game I did culture flip an AI city which had an airport, so I could fly my warrior garrisons around

I took q. a long break from it, after which coming back made the game 'fresh' again for me.

I'd also (foolishly) bought and tried Civ V  which to be fair at least made clear what an incredible game Civ IV is.

The other things which have helped recently are trying some of the Noble's Club games at various levels and playing an on-going pitt boss game with a friend from work (he's the only chap I know personally that plays). Playing against/with a human opponent makes a huge difference to the game.

Perhaps trying weird variants might help, like some of Mad Scientist's RPC games? :)

I started playing the Legends of Revolution mod recently. It adds new techs, units, wonders etc. but not an overwhelming amount of stuff, and it is very well balanced for a mod. The Legends are a really interesting idea - powerful military units that can only be built once per game (like a world wonder).

I've heard that BAT is pretty good, but I am rather insane. :p

I generally avoid posting in S&T, though I do lurk. The hardcore boys over there get a little bent if you make a silly comment or two, and I have a tendency...

I'm guilty of that as well. I was very disappointed in Civ5. It is just a bad game all round, though the uninstall went quite well. :D

Thank you to everyone for the very good suggestions. I've never tried for a cultural victory. Perhaps I'll give that one a go when I get home. Maybe some of the other mods as well.

@Gurn:

Did we learn something about calling cell phones at 3:00 AM? Nitwit.

Never tried a cultural victory? Changing up your VC might go a long way to keeping the game interesting. Do you try a good variety of leaders and maps?

I wouldn't start your cultural victory attempts on deity then Lemon ;)

But first read the gospel according to jesusin, best guide for cultural games

I've just realised who your new avatar reminds me of as well LM!

Getting back to Lemon's real problem.
Watch Bibor's civ5 Augustus videos on youtube and adios sleeping problems.

In Rio with a pretty girl, and you're here? I'm flattered.

I play LoR pretty much exclusively nowadays; the early game is SO much more dynamic, and there seems to be more options in the later game. I also tend to RPC things a bit; that provides an extra level of detail, and anthropomorphizes the 0s and 1s. Maybe some Emperors Club, LHC, RPCs, or SGs over on the S&T side might help liven things up.

Now turn off the computer and get back to the Mrs. :D

Not sure if you're referring to people like me... but generally things only get tense when someone claims expertise yet makes unsupportable claims. For what it's worth, I think you're not arrogant enough to catch much flak there and charming enough that you could get most people un-bent again in short order.

Female gamers tend to get a lot more dismissive comments at best, and out right rudeness at worst. Even here, Lemon has mentioned to me before (and I don't feel I'm betraying a confidence) that she's received some pretty nasty messages from fanboys, to the point where she's taken herself off the forums several times.

I think now is a good time to do it, and venture forth into S&T. 1) Lemon's a well known friend and personality, 2) Most of the more ridiculous pinheads seem to have migrated over to the CiV forums, and 3) She's charming, and good enough, and smart enough, and gosh darnit, people like her. :D

Nasty PM's to female gamers?! CFC needs some sensitivity training!
