Just played a game and found out that almost every units traveled the same number of tiles on railroads. I used to think that tanks and workers could travel twice as fast, and I was bogged down why it took my tanks 5 turns to travel across Europe on the World Map. Also, it's weird that helicopters can travel farther on roads than on railroads. (exception is unit that has morale promotion).
Whoa... so let me get this straight: Gunships travel slower over a Railroad network than over a Road network. Is that what you're telling me? I rarely make it to the late game units, preferring to win wars earlier on in the game, but I assumed that Railroad-spam was a good thing. Now it sounds like I'll have to leave a "helicopter path" (akin to a bike path) just to get full usage out of my Gunships. Please confirm that I understood this point correctly.
Unexpected... well, how about when Warlords first came out and the Vassalization system was still new... I got into a war against Isabella alongside Shaka. Shaka beat me to a couple of junky Cities but I had bombarded Isabella's capital and one of her good Cities, had killed most units in the Cities, and was waiting for the next turn to capture the Cities so that I would have sufficient units to move into the Cities (I'd probably exhausted my supply of attacking units with movement points remaining anyway).
Before I got to play my next turn, my units were teleported out into the middle of nowhere (outside of Isabella's Cultural Borders) and she became Shaka's Vassal.
Of course, to top it all off, I decided that I'd get an ally out of Ramesses and spread my State Religion to him. I spent my Hammers on Misisonaries. Missionaries for ALL of his Cities. I did so because he had spread his own State Religion to all of his Cities. In fact, he ended up with 4 Religions in almost all of his Cities. The bugger couldn't be bribed to change Religions and he didn't choose to do so on his own. Then he ended up defeating me by winning a Cultural Victory, a good part of which was due to my efforts!
Of course, the whole "Friendly AI doesn't act in a Friendly manner" towards you (i.e. starts paying attention to We Fear You Are Becoming Too Advanced counters, isn't as easy to bribe diplomatically, etc) after you acquire a Vassal--that situation--is bound to be on just about everybody's list.
The fact that BTS further marginalized the Space Elevator by making it available from a tech that you can ignore for a Space Victory was a bit of a shocker.
I was also surprised once when Monte marched his units across 3/4 of the world in a Pangaea map, managed to wind his way down a curvy peninsula, and declared on Isabella. Presumably, he did so not because she was a Heathen but because he lacked a Holy City. After capturing hers, he was content to make Peace, share a Religion with her, and they became best buddies...
