Feel free to post anything that happened unexpectedly in your games.

Just played a game and found out that almost every units traveled the same number of tiles on railroads. I used to think that tanks and workers could travel twice as fast, and I was bogged down why it took my tanks 5 turns to travel across Europe on the World Map. Also, it's weird that helicopters can travel farther on roads than on railroads. (exception is unit that has morale promotion).

In the same game, I fought a war w/ Churchill. I was surprised that he had assembly line but didnt researchd rifling. Took advantage of that fool and vassalized him.

Think of it this way: On the railroad, everything is loaded on a train, whether it is foot soldiers, cavalry, tanks, helicopters or whatever, so they all travel at the same speed - that of the train. On the roads, they all travel under their own power, so motorized and cavalry travel faster than foot troops, although they all travel faster on the nice smooth road than they would over rough terrain. The helicopters are flying low, so can move faster above the roads where visibility is better than over rough land and they are faster in flight than sitting on railroad flatcars. (Note to nit pickers - this is a way to think of movement in CIV not real life.)

I just played a game and no civ had rifling, despite half of them having assembly line and also physics. So it's airship and longbows versus rifleman/infantery. And despite continues wars, no AI researched rifling (or military science for that matter)! It is frustrating to see. One of the AI's is kublai kahn, you'd expect him to b-line military techs at least a bit..

as far as i remember ... on the roads bit, theres a rule that no unit can travel more than ... 10 titles on a railroad i think it is

I was playing all war and realized when two units of different civs were on the same tile that everyone was against me. Not everyone against each other. That made me mad.

In a recent game, Wang Kon inexplicably gifted me a city in the very early game. Then I noticed he had a stack wandering around in my backline (we had open borders). Then without warning, he declared on me, and that wandering stack came from behind my backline to retake the city he'd gifted me a few hundred years earlier. I swear he did this on purpose to mess with my head.

Rifling somehow is not a very high priority tech for the A.I. If they somehow got Scientific Methods, I'd venture that the A.I. will constantly prioritize the techs after SM over Rifling.

That makes good sense. But IIR doesn't it say 1/10 movement cost? (I might have just assumed it said this mind, without properly reading it)
Or is it just another case of the ingame text lying to us :D

I'm sorry, but this ^^ is funny as hell!:lol::rotfl:

Whoa... so let me get this straight: Gunships travel slower over a Railroad network than over a Road network. Is that what you're telling me? I rarely make it to the late game units, preferring to win wars earlier on in the game, but I assumed that Railroad-spam was a good thing. Now it sounds like I'll have to leave a "helicopter path" (akin to a bike path) just to get full usage out of my Gunships. Please confirm that I understood this point correctly.

Unexpected... well, how about when Warlords first came out and the Vassalization system was still new... I got into a war against Isabella alongside Shaka. Shaka beat me to a couple of junky Cities but I had bombarded Isabella's capital and one of her good Cities, had killed most units in the Cities, and was waiting for the next turn to capture the Cities so that I would have sufficient units to move into the Cities (I'd probably exhausted my supply of attacking units with movement points remaining anyway).

Before I got to play my next turn, my units were teleported out into the middle of nowhere (outside of Isabella's Cultural Borders) and she became Shaka's Vassal.

Of course, to top it all off, I decided that I'd get an ally out of Ramesses and spread my State Religion to him. I spent my Hammers on Misisonaries. Missionaries for ALL of his Cities. I did so because he had spread his own State Religion to all of his Cities. In fact, he ended up with 4 Religions in almost all of his Cities. The bugger couldn't be bribed to change Religions and he didn't choose to do so on his own. Then he ended up defeating me by winning a Cultural Victory, a good part of which was due to my efforts!

Of course, the whole "Friendly AI doesn't act in a Friendly manner" towards you (i.e. starts paying attention to We Fear You Are Becoming Too Advanced counters, isn't as easy to bribe diplomatically, etc) after you acquire a Vassal--that situation--is bound to be on just about everybody's list.

The fact that BTS further marginalized the Space Elevator by making it available from a tech that you can ignore for a Space Victory was a bit of a shocker.

I was also surprised once when Monte marched his units across 3/4 of the world in a Pangaea map, managed to wind his way down a curvy peninsula, and declared on Isabella. Presumably, he did so not because she was a Heathen but because he lacked a Holy City. After capturing hers, he was content to make Peace, share a Religion with her, and they became best buddies...

I seem to recall someone saying in a long ago thread that the text got written before the game coding was finished, so it does not always match what really happens.

Pacal II hates my guts, and builds the UN. However, everyone hates him, so I get elected Secretary general. I no longer have to worry about killing him because I proceed to win a diplomatic victory. I wasn't even anywhere close to Mass Media. Thanks! :p

Gandhi and monty start next to eachother in one game. They both hate eachother instantly. Monty goes into war prep mode and I think "uh-oh, look out Mohandas!". But Gandhi beats him to the punch! He declares war on Monty, then proceeds to wipe him off the map! Unbelievable!

I was playing a game last night (which I'm in the process of finishing up now) when I get the triple message: Open borders with Byzantine Empire cancelled, Clam to Byzantine for Cow cancelled, the Byzantine Empire has been destroyed.

I'm like, what the heck? Me, Wang Kong, Mansa Musa and whoever runs the Byzantines (I'm playing an unrestricted leaders game, so it's Mansa of Spain, and Wang of Mongolia, which is seriously amusing...) are alone on this continent, it's far too early for someone to have found us from somewhere else (that wouldn't happen for another 2k years iirc) so how did the AI lose his 4 city empire without me seeing a declaration of war?

So, I'm curious, I open up the WB to have a quick peek, and there are all 4 of his cities. Under barbarian control. Wow. I forgot to take a screenshot at that time, but here's a much later game screenshot of his empire. Take note of the extreme crappiness of his land, not to mention the asinine place he founded his capital.

Once in a game the AP election was coming, and there were 2 AI's that could be voted, Ramses and Pericles. Ramses was cautious towards me, meanwhile Pericles hated me to death. Both of them were friendly with each other.

The problem was: Ramses was like +900000 with Pericles!! He was so in love with pericles that, instead of voting for himself he actually voted for PERICLES!

D.amn!!

Needless to say, shortly enough, the world considered myself a villain for neglecting a AP decision...

stupid Ramses

(btw, as the voting turned out, if he had voted for himself, he would have won..!)

That's hilarious, exactly the same thing happened to me with Pacal once.
