Who is the most recent Great Artist? I think its Miles Davis, but didnt look through the .xml.

I know Miles Davis was influential, but for the 20th century, I am trying to think of someone more current that could be in the game. Although I am not a diehard fan, Michael Jackson seems to make the most sense.:gp:

Actually I can think of dozens that could be GA's.

Some days I can find the GP .xml, and today I cannot:crazyeye:

John Adams, although I think having the whole modern soundtrack consist of his music would probably be enough tribute

Congrats, you just failed the internet.

And OP, Michael Jackson? Artistic merit aside, why would anyone support a pedophile? Are you hoping to be invited for a sleepover?

I would be amused if Andy Warhol were to pop up, especially if he were to look like himself, rather than Elvis. BTW, are there writers among among GAs or just musicians and painters/sculptors? If so, then Gabriel Garcia Marquez without a doubt needs to be in.

Michael Jackson? Do you want great artists in the game, or great freaks?

Now somebody like Frank Herbert.. now there's an entertainer!

Of course he would be the only great person in the game who had a history of questionably behavior  The great people are valued as artists, scientists, generals, engineers, whatever, and not for their moral worth, and if you're going to penalize Michael Jackson for being a deviant by today's puritanical standards, you'll have to cut a good number of great people from the game. And whether or not you like him (I, quite frankly, don't), the guy is one of the more influential musical figures of the past century.

Anyways, all of the sudden the forum has the feel of a group of old ladies commenting on tabloids in the supermarket lineup. Let's get back to thinking of people based on their historical worth, and not about how the media presents them, eh?

How is Michael Jackson one of the more influential musical figures of the past century? He's not even in the top 100. Stevie Wonder is a much more influential pop singer by far, and his composition and arranging skills dwarf those of M.J. And he's just one of many from the same era for whom this is true.

Oh great, here it comes with the "my artist is better than the guy you named!" chest thumping. You're saying that the guy who more or less re-invented music videos into what they've been since... Well, since he re-invented them is not even in the top 100 of the century? You can't watch MTV for ten minutes without seeing a music video that reeks of the way Michael Jackson did it - and did it first. Michael Jackson style syncopated choreography is *huge* in pop music today.

As a pop singer, no, he's not the most important... But as a pop-musician performer, he is easily one of the top of the century. Pop music oozes Michael Jackson's influence - just not from the music itself, but from the dance associated with it and the form which music videos have taken since his (at the time) novel approach to them.

Frankly, I don't want to get into a debate. I don't even like the man's music, and I really don't like his style of performance. But to deny his influence is just stupid. Name people more influential? Great, so can I. But he IS one of the more influential of the century - my original claim.

I'll concede that Jackson is more influential than average while still maintaining that he doesn't crack the top 100 for the century.

It's kinda funny how Sid & his team change his birthname after the translation.. Franz--->Frank

Well there is no debate that the two xml files I mentioned above are the only two that need tweaking. There is however, debate on who is a great artist. Warhol is another excellent idea. As for MJ, freak aside, was in the rock and roll hall of fame (which everyone good makes it in).

The important list imo would be the Grammy Lifetime Acheivement Awards. So far many Civ4 GA's have rec'd it like Duke Ellington, Louis Armstrong, Miles Davis, & Elvis, David Bowie, Stevie Wonder... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grammy_Lifetime_Achievement_Award
