Unit Experience Promotions

I have not been playing civ 4 for long and have not even tried bts and the other one. My query is, when I win a battle my units seem to automatically promote themselves to whatever they like. How do you choose the promotion you want? Is there a setting somewhere which I have missed.

You must have the "Units Auto-Promote" option enabled, this thing is horrible.
Turn it off in the game options!!!!
