Introduction
Last June, I hosted my first Unit Request Tournament. I enjoyed the tournament last summer, and I've decided to host another one this summer. Last year there were a number of high-quality requests, and I believe I ended up creating three of the requested units: the winning request, the Shienaran; the Chakra Thrower; and everyone's favorite request, the Kool-Aid Man. I'm hoping for more high-quality requests this time around.

Process
Submission Deadline
Everyone has until July 1, 2008, to submit one request.

Setting the Field
After July 1, 2008, I will select the best requests and set up a tournament field. The number of requests making it into the tournament depends on the number of requests and their quality, but is ultimately at my sole discression. For example, receiving around 16 requests would probably lead to a four request tournament; around 30 requests would probably lead to an eight request tournament. Last year the tournament was between 16 unit requests.

Tournament
Sometime after the tournament field is selected and pairings determined, I will announce the tournament field. As the winners are determined, I will announce who advances through the tournament until the winner is ultimately announced.

Submission Rules
Requests per Person
Each person is allowed one requst. Any additional requests will result in a disqualification.

Either Or
Because I will be selecting the units which make it into the tournament field, no "either or" requests are allowed. "Either or" requests will be viewed as multiple requests and result in a disqualification.

Unit Types
Requests can be for any unit type, even if I've never done one before (e.g., ships, planes).

Seconding
You may second a request, if you wish, but it will only make the request more likely to make the tournament field in that the number of requests to choose from is smaller by one request. The same result would come from not placing a request, as seconded requests will not increase the overall number of requests and therefore not affect the size of the selection pool.

Discussion
Other than making one post to request a unit, do not post in this thread until after July 1, 2008. Additional posts before July 1, 2008 will result in a disqualification.

Selection Criteria
Unit Type
There is no restriction on unit type for requests; all types are welcome. However, if you look at the units I've made, you'll notice that I'm most interested in making foot units and the occasional mounted unit. Still, if I see another unit type that sparks my interest, I'll include it in the field.

Need
I'm more inclined to make a unit that someone has a need for. A scenerio, a mod, whatever. Feel free to explain why you want the unit, or how the unit will help you.

Images
One of the strongest factors in determining which units I make is how the unit looks. If an image looks cool, I'm more likely to want to make it into a unit. As you can gather from that, images are important. I probably will not select a request unaccompanied by an image.

Uniqueness
The more unique the unit is, the more likely it is that it will be selected.

Possibility to Make
I have begun to model with Blender, and I believe this allows me to create better, more organic-shaped models. Still, I can't model everything. I will not select a request that I don't believe I can complete.

Micellaneous
Whatever else leads me to select a request. The above are just to help you make a reques with a good chance of being selected.

Disclaimer
Last year the tournament was a single-elimination tournament--from 16 teams to 8 teams, then to 4 teams, then to 2 teams, and finally to the winning request. This year I might change the format to be like the World Cup format. The first stage would be a group round-robin, followed by a sinlge-elimination final stage. I'm not sure what I'll end up doing; I just wanted to make everyone aware of the potential change.

A Space Marine!

This marine is not equipped precisely as I request but its the darn best image of one that I have ever seen!

Early Spanish Javelinman

An ancient unit for Iberian Spain, it can also be used by the Carthaginians, Greeks, and Romans as a mercenary. :)

Hussite War Wagon! :D

A late medieval "tank" (sort of), drawn by a team of four horses, with either hand cannoneers or crossbowmen firing from it (AttackA) and dismounting and firing beside it (AttackB).

I would prefer the straight walls over the "lattice/fence post" style.

Why do I need this unit?
(A) I lack the skills for animating humanoid units.
(B) I am working on a "European Conquest" mod, which includes all European nations/civilizations including the Czechs. The Hussite War Wagon is earmarked to be the Czech UU.
(C) It is a plain cool unit concept.

I'm gonna stick with last years entry, the one thing all decent fantasy mods are lacking today:
a traditional witch!
She fell for a French sailor last year. Hopefully she'll know better by now...

The flying monkey is optional; a black cat, a kettle or a teapot may suffice as her parafernalia.

Well, if you're asking everyone, I could really use a Grey type alien UU for my space mod/scenario that I'm making. It would go well with the LH somebody did, I forget, but the leader looks just like a Grey. Something along the lines of this guy, with maybe a psionic attack. I'm sure NavyDawg could also use it for his expansion of Space Opera that he is/might do/doing. Wiki article here, with a good overall explanation, because we all know they're editing it to make sure the articles factual. ;)

Even if it gets voted down, somebody else could do it...:hmm:

For me, a perennial request:

A Stagecoach/Carriage, 2 horses:

Rendered in brown for Western/rural or fantasy mods

Rendered in black for The Steampunk Mod, 16th - 19th century european civs

Possible upgrade line could be Chariot -> Brown carriage -> Black Carriage. Can actually have firepower (driver, passengers). Endless ways to trick this out (except rims).

Rakshasa - a Hindu Demon:

Preferred attributes:
  • Blue Skin (although, as widely as their appearance varies, even the skin could be civ - colored)
  • Exaggerated features such as big bellies, huge tusks or a beak, bulging eyes, ears as big as their head, and their peculiar head shape
  • Bands or stripes of color on their heads are another possibility for civ-color
  • Claws instead of finger & toe nails
  • More than 2 arms - different weapons & a couple can just use claws
  • Multi-colored wings ( not for flying, think of a rooster's display in a cockfight) - another possible civ-color spot
  • The illustrated clothing style - lots more civ-color possibilities

They don't have to match human size units (bigger is okay). They're strong but clumsy fighters - the attacks can be simple. One arm doing the actual attack while the others just move. Also, I'd be willing to sacrifice either the wings or the multiple arms if doing both is too intense.

The Rakshasa are a key civilization for the Bharata Varsha mod I'm working on. I can repurpose some units from other mods (WH for example) - but these guys are needed as their elite units. A differently sized or colored version would work for a GL/King unit as well.

A gang member, bandana, no shirt, Mr. T'esque gold chains with twin automatic weapons (Mac 10's are preferrable). Similar to the one made by odintheking.

I'll search for a picture similar to what I'm looking for. Though if you watch "Gangland" on the History Channel, you've probably already seen what I have in mind.

Similar to the one below, but with a bandana not a hat. Also, he should be wielding Mac 10's not Tec-9's (those tattoo's are good, but I highly doubt they'd be visible at Civ-scale, even if he was white).

I request something I recently built myself: A Pierriére.

This is a small handpowered catapult. The strings are pulled by two to six people.

I'd love to see two little medieval soldiers pulling the strings, a third reloading.

Me and a friend have built one of these in the recent weeks. This weekend, it will be presented at a museum's fair. I can post pictures or a video if you want. :)

I'd love to have it for civ because

1) it was a common European piece of artillery in the 11-13th century, used for attack AND defense.
2) nothing like this has been made before
3) I built my own in real life. ;)

I would like to request a Khmer/Siamese War Elephant from the movie The Legend of Suriyothai. I want it for my personal mod but I am sure it would get a lot of use plus you did a good Macedonian elephant so you know your way around an elephant

Here is picture of the riders
