Hi all,

Just brought Civ4 the other day, because for some reason my new computer doesnt run civ3 as well as my old lol.

Anyway just a few questions, I tried searching but couldnt find anything.

1. Is there away to hide units when fortified in cities, like in previous civs? I dont like seeing the units I like seeing the city.

2. When negotiating with other countries, sometimes all thier options are red? What does this mean and why is it like that?

3. Can you gift military units like in civ2? That was the best feature ever, means you could sponsor another country to kill your enemy for you lol.

and 4. What is "strength" and how does it work? I cant see any defence rating etc etc from earlyer games?

Thanks, noob I know but ya have to learn somehow lol.

Cheers

I don't think so. You can check the options (Control + O), but I can't recall any such ability.

2. When negotiating with other countries, sometimes all thier options are red? What does this mean and why is it like that?

It means they won't trade that resource/tech/thing, not even if you propose an unbelievable offer. Usually this is the case if they don't like you, if they're trying to monopolize an important tech, or if they are building a wonder that becomes available with a certain tech.

3. Can you gift military units like in civ2? That was the best feature ever, means you could sponsor another country to kill your enemy for you lol.

Yeah, you can. If you move your units into a civilization's borders, you'll see a button that looks like a gift box. Click that (I'm not sure of a keyboard shortcut), and your units will become theirs.

and 4. What is "strength" and how does it work? I cant see any defence rating etc etc from earlyer games?

Strength replaces separate attack and defend ratings. This is affected by various things, like promotions and terrain. For more, you can read this article on combat.

Welcome to the forums! Let us know if you have more questions. :)

Cheers thanks heaps, glad the unit giving is back haha. Sucks about the units over cities thing, yeah I checked the options cause thats where it was in Civ3. But oh well.

So with this strength thing I guess there are no longer dedicated defense and offence units etc?

Cheers

There are. Some units get defensive bonuses, other don't. Some units get access to defensive promos, other to offensive promos. Some units have inherent defensive bonuses. other offensive ones.

Just take the longbow as example, who gets defensive bonuses, has bonuses in cities and on hills, and has access to the city garrison, the guerilla and the woodsman promotion. Completely defensive.

Aw thats stupid, they were the best, although I never ever saw the AI use them.

Hi

I made a little mod some time ago so that units over cities are not shown.
It can be found here.
I'm using it for quite a while now, and it works good for me.
It is for BtS 3.13. I made a 3.17 version already and will upload this soon.

If you want to use it and you need it for a different version, or if you encounter any problems, just post in the thread linked above.

Sounds good, but I havnt got BTS yet, that wasnt on sale lol. maybe this weekend.

One thing I noticed last night, is that you cant hurry city stuff til like democracy or something??? Whats the point of gold then?

Rushing with gold is only available under Universal Suffrage (a government civic). Gold is useful for a few reasons:
  • Trading for techs, maps, or other agreements
  • Allowing you to deficit research (have a negative gold per turn)
  • Paying for random events so that you can get better results
  • Miscellaneous stuff (like spreading corporations, upgrading units, etc.)

Deficit research is perhaps the most important.

Yeah upgrading is all I use it for really.

Whats this "spreading corporations"?

And yeah deficit research works a treat when ya need it.

Still Id like to have it back full time. Like if the S**t his the fan and you need to raise an army fast or your attacking and need garrison troops, I like the hurry button, just means you have to save abit before a campaign.

In the early game, once you have bronze working you can adopt slavery. This will let you force out units quickly - however the cost is not gold, it's population.

I'd like if you could make units fortified in cities look like Godzilla, since the scale is way off.

Corporations are a way to utilize extra instances of resources like iron or rice. Mining inc. gives +1 production in every city you spread it to for every instance of iron, copper, coal, silver, and gold you have. Sid's Sushi gives food and culture to cities for every seafood and rice you have. Those two are considered by most to be the best corps. It costs money to establish a branch in each city, more so if you spread it to a foreign city.

Is this corporation thing a BTS thing? Cause Im near the end of my first game and I havnt seen these corporation thing yet? Although I may not have the tech for it yet?

Can you destroy a city at anytime like Civ3? Also I was looking at the Civ4 downloads, Is there a feature to just use a custom created Map? Like load a worldmap but choose your own civilizations to play it against?

Yes, Corporations are only in BtS.

Yeah Ive begun to notice that, also is there armies in this one? like Civ3?

While their may not be armies, in the Warlords and BtS expansion packs you can have great generals lead your troops as a warlord and your troops would subsequently get promotions which will increase their strength.

So with this strength thing I guess there are no longer dedicated defense and offence units etc?

Archery, gunpowder, infantry, and mechanized infantry units are the main defensive units in the game. Other units are available in mods and expansion packs.

Can you destroy a city at anytime like Civ3?

Sadly, no. If you capture an enemy city you can raze it but you can't raze one of your own cities. You can however use the world builder to delete cities but that's cheating so I wouldn't recommend doing that.

Is there a feature to just use a custom created Map? Like load a worldmap but choose your own civilizations to play it against?

Please rephrase the question. You can use custom created maps includding those of Earth/Terra. Some of them have fixed civs but many mods do not.

2. When negotiating with other countries, sometimes all thier options are red? What does this mean and why is it like that?

Red stands for the blind ignorance of civ4, because If they are annoyed with you, they cannot trade. Fact: Plenty of countries in the real world that are annoyed with each other, will still trade.

3. Can you gift military units like in civ2? That was the best feature ever, means you could sponsor another country to kill your enemy for you lol.

You cannot guift units if you do not have an open boarders treaty, and you will not want to have any open boarders treaty otherwise the AI will shove cities up your ass wherever they can.

Um ok like Civ2 was easy as, the game came with worldmedium and world large map and you could just start the game on them choosing the 7 civs you want to play against and all the rules etc. Civ3 there was also a few world maps I think they were located in civcontent or something like that, again you could just choose all your own options etc.

But in Civ4 I cant find that, the only options you have is "play scenario" or "play custom scenario" in which there are a few maps etc. I found one last night called "earth18civs" and Im playing that currently but still when you set up the game you can choose the civs etc and only a few rules.

Does that explain it. Like in Civ3 I enjoyed playing ultra huge world maps (365x365 etc) with the full 32 civilizations??
