Hey hey Civfanatics! A quick heads-up that the next Civ VII update - 1.2.5 - is on the way, targeting next week. Some things to look forward to:
  • New maps and improved map generation
  • A rebalance for Napoleon
  • Diplomatic and Expansionist-themed City States
  • Part 2 of Right to Rule, featuring Lakshmibai, Silla, and Qajar
+ much more, that will be in the full update notes when they go live. 🙇‍♀️ I'll be back to share more soon!

Thanks for the update!

I‘m very curious for the new maps. The example shown might indicate only that the split can now be horizontal and not always vertical. That would be a step up, but it seems there is more than that. In any case, not knowing the best direction to sail to at the start of exploration beforehand is a big plus.

I think having more CS types is one of the most elegant nerfs to CS play possible! When there aren’t 3-4 cultural and scientific CS each any more, you have to prioritize bonuses better. I smell that diplo CS will be a good starter in antiquity and that expansionist ones are lackluster, but let‘s see what they provide.

Napoleon rework is welcome, but hardly a major thing.

No mention of age transitions, improved identity, or hotseat though.

I am fascinated by the new City-state’s type bonuses, and what the Napoleon bonuses will look like. I’m hoping both personas get more of a rework than a balance pass since there are some deep issues particularly in Emperor’s design.

Very excited to find out more about the second half of Right to Rule.

It's a really depressing announcrment after waiting a while... These aren't changes which look remotely likely to move the needle. Unless Firaxis has really buried the lead, we're still gonna be on the struggle bus.
Can't imagine the recent layoffs helped. This is probably everything that the team could put together before end of September for their Right to Rule promise, and I'd expect a longer period of quiet afterwards. If there's a fix for people obviously disappointed - like yourself - I imagine that will come at the same time as the first proper expansion.

As a great fan of the combination "bigger and smaller landmasses" those scripts strike my personal vein. Any improvment in the overall generation process towards a less predictable and more natural result is welcome, too.

New IP types are nice, though it's nothing I desparetly waited for (especially as general problem with IPs linger, like the general AI behaviour towards them...Civ5 did this a lot better, where attacking someone elses friendly CS caused specific diplomatic interactions and consequences). Sure, as far as I understand you get some compensation in influence...but it is the AI logic missing here: I just don't have the impression that they realize doing a transgression (and weighting whether they really want to do that)

And Napoleon...not sure if he needs an update...but isn't that the leader you get in exchange for linking your game somehow with 2K? If so, it smells a bit like this should be further promoted and since it is a concept I generally don't like, it will be a part of the update I don't care about. But of course, I'm fine with those having striked into the deal now getting a better balanced/more fun(?) Napoleon :)

I'm curious what else will be in the patch...and I agree - it is nice that we get the info not to plan with the update this week already!

Conspiracy time now: we already have expansionist and diplomatic attribute points, and soon we’ll also be getting expansionist and diplomatic city-states. Could these be strong hints that we’ll eventually see expansionist and diplomatic legacy paths in the future? In any case, they’re great additions to give the game more variety. I wonder if these will be entirely new city-states or if the current ones will be adjusted.

I believe truly major changes will only be possible in expansions.

This "and more..." at the end of every announcement...
"More" will probably be something like "fixed a typo in the chinese version of the game".

Map scripts by themselves can be a big chance if the existing templates are being overhauled as well. I like the additional CS categories as well.

As is often the case, it's not telling us too much, but the july patch also teased three things and we got quite a few subtantial changes in that one.

It'll definitely be grounds to pick up the game again and start a new run.

I do think that's a little unfair. The UI was a mess, but that is getting tackled in the free updates. With a few decent UI mods, the game feels complete, it's just not to your liking.
I was trying to ooze as much sarcasm as possible. I only half mean it. Or maybe 2/3 mean it. A third for each non-functional age...
