ARRRR!!! Republic of Pirates will be fun. I find it amusing that I thought the Great Lighthouse was already in. Its fine we can have 2. Should be a fun update next week, I like the idea of the Atolls another obstical, I'm guessing they can't be founded or built on, but hoping you can park land units on them to heal mid-voyage.
Civ Cwitching complaints can finally stop. I hope it is basically a challenge mode where you don't get any bonuses outside of your age, allow other players to switch.

As I said before, I think Pirate republic is...odd. HOWEVER, it being a part of a free DLC for early adopters, is absolutely the way to do it, big kudos for that. The rest of the DLC I'm really excited for,

things that I wanted to draw attention to:

  • Great Blue Hole- awesome, the Caribbean has enough natural wonders to pull from no need to do fantasy inspired natural wonders.
  • Tonga, Ottomans and Iceland, are incredible adds.
  • Sayyida al-Hurra - is a really cool leader to add, hopefully Morrocco makes it in later on.
  • Classical mode- yes, give people that want the challenge the option, I do wonder if It will lock us into 1 civ, or give you the option during age transition, because maybe I just want to go Rome into exploration and rename my capital Constantinople you know?
All of these improvements seem targeted to make exploration era more fun, but with the addition of the Pirate republic it really feels like late ancient/ early medieval, doesn't quite exist in this timeline, like at all, I'm fine with an early cutoff in modern (as in I dont need a future era). But the gap between Antiquity and Exploration really just gets larger with each civ added it seems, Pirates really highlights this.

My biggest hope is they are focusing on making exploration more interesting now, and working on a "medieval" era in the meanwhile for an expansion.

You're all missing the most important update.

... TURTLES ARE BACK BABEEEEEEEEEEEH

Seriously though, between the free DLC and the option to move away from civ switching being tested, it's clear Firaxis paid attention.

An entire DLC for Free is incredible. Thanks Firaxis, I look forward to playing Teach and the Pirate Republic!

Free at the 'cost' of signing up for a 2K account presumably. It's escalated from scout cat to free leaders to now an entire DLC lol

1) the idea that chronology infers priority is a fallacy. just because a civ comes earlier in the development cycle doesn't mean it's taking the place of another civ. It just means you have to be patient for whichever ones you want.
And then the latter a civ is added the more likely for it to be more interesting. Be it because the game has created more mechanics by then or that when adding new civs they tend to look at the ones already in to try to make them more unique.
The only bad thing about this announcement is that 1.3.0 releases on the EU5 release day and a week before Anno 117. My free time in November will be heavily competed for. As if there wasn‘t also a novel I‘ve been waiting for for years…
For me is Farthest Frontier right now, CK3 AUH tomorrow, and then anno 117. But that is fine, games like civ and the others I listed here are they type I tend to pick up play for a few weeks a lot and then only pick them up again in a few months, rinse and repeat.

Well, I must admit that the idea of a pirate civilization being the first “civilization” from the Caribbean to debut in the franchise doesn’t please me at all — but at least it’s free content, so I’m… okay with it. I think Edward Teach would already be an acceptable and sufficient choice to represent the Caribbean pirates. However, I’m very happy to know that the Ottomans, Tonga, and Iceland are on the way. Sayyida al Hurra is an excellent addition as a leader, now we just need a Moroccan civilization.

But what really got me excited above all else is this:

First, we're testing some dramatic changes to the Legacy Paths and Victories in Civ VII. We want to open up the game and provide many new paths your empire can follow while achieving greatness and competing for victory.

Second - and this one’s been one of the most requested features from players - we're internally playtesting ways to play as one civ continuously through the ages, allowing you to choose a civilization from any Age and guide them throughout your journey through history.

By fixing the two biggest problems in this game — the forced civilization switching and the scripted legacy paths — it will surely become a great game.

The old conundrum... Pirates are here, so they take another civilization's spot. Don't really believe in it.

I find it good that we switched away from "we put in the game things that were historically relevant" to "we put in the game things that might be fun". First, because "historically relevant" is nonsensical and skewed towards you particular education, and second, because we'd have yet again the same things very close to one another with minimal gameplay changes.

In a DLC about naval gameplay, the Republic of Pirates has totally its place, because it's the excuse to bring new and exciting gameplay. I guess some would have preferred Portugal, for example, but that'd be just Spain 2.0. Where's the variety in that?

So I'm all for it. They might be the Bulgarian-upon-the-Sea civ, which could be interesting, especially if they can take point from treasure fleets themselves.

Which begets other questions: from all the civs, which one belong to which Age? I guess Pirates are exploration, as well as the Ottomans (although they could be in Modern, but they'd fit better in Exploration). But what about Tonga and Iceland? Chronologically speaking, I'd put Iceland into Exploration, but I think they're planned into Ancient. As for Tonga, they couldn't be before Exploration (as it was founded in the 13th century IIRC), but their wonder Ha'amonga 'a Maui is an Ancient wonder (which, now that I think about it, is weird). So would that mean that the Tonga are also an Ancient civ? That would give us 2 Ancient and 2 Exploration civs, without Modern one (except if they put Ottomans in Modern).
But if Iceland is in Ancient, could that mean that they'd get abilities to cross the oceans earlier, in the Ancient Era? That'd be great, though, not gonna lie, being the first one to be able to explore the Distant Lands and have your pick of the litter, although in terms of balance and how the game is designed, I don't know how it'd fit in...

What do you think? What age for each civ?

Edit
: just saw the leaks, Tonga is Ancient (same Khmer logic, I guess) and Pirates are Exploration (as guessed), but I wonder for Iceland and Ottomans, as both could be in each age of their respective ages.

Aside from everything else, I'm really glad to see this cadence of new civs. I wasn't expecting anything new until early next year. Would be happy to pay for them, but free for a limited time is a lovely sweetener to reward early adopters and encourage those currently on the fence.

Did the leaks mention unique units, infrastructure, civics, traditions
not to my knowledge no, the only reference to units is
Spoiler :
in the description of the pirate republic and a buccaneer unit but i wonder if this was just refering to privateer unit or is a special privateer unit idk

also this may be a thing

n a DLC about naval gameplay, the Republic of Pirates has totally its place, because it's the excuse to bring new and exciting gameplay.
My particular issue with it is the wonky exploration timeline, if I squint my eyes to me, Pirates could even be modern, but I dont think that's what they are going for.

My guess is Tonga is getting Khmer'ed, so something like:

  • Antiquity- Tonga
  • Exploration - Iceland, Pirates
  • Modern - Ottomans

man...I really, really want a medieval age, it would solve all of these weird timeline oddities, split some civs, move a few back and forth and we could have stuff like

  • MEDIEVAL- Castille, Normans, Iceland - Tonga
  • EXPLORATION - Spain, England, Pirates - Hawaii
  • MODERN - Britain, Sweden - Maori
