Upgrading Confusion

I just noticed that it seems to be possible to upgrade civ-specific units to another ones, e.g. the chinese Rider to the japanese samurai. I got that from the rules in the editor after patch 1.17.

Has someone tested that in the actual game and can confirm that it works? It doesn't seem to make sense to me, if the Romans can have persian Immortals?!

These changes do also look a bit stupid. So, before the patch, you upgraded the War Chariot (2/1/2) to the Knight (4/3/2). Now you upgrade it to the Horseman, whose stats are the same, but more expensive. I can't see the sense in it.

I don't know if this is supposed to be right or if it's a bug.

Any comments appreciated.

i am playing a huge map, me, aztecs, vs 7 others. it's boiled down to me vs the persians. after wiping out 18 knights/cavalry on 1 turn, 3 turns later he hit me with a single column of ~ 60 fighters. i thought i saw samurai, but didn't investigate it fully. i will go back and look.

Including civ unique units in the upgrade chain was added in the 1.17f patch. For example Horseman upgrades to Mounted Warrier, Mounted Warrier to Knight, Knight to Rider, Rider to, Samurai, Samurai to War Elephant, War Elephant to Cavalry. This does not cause a problem, because the upgrade command will automatically skip any units that your civ is not allowed to build. The result is that every civ can now upgrade to its unique unit (eq. Japanese can upgrade from Horseman to Samurai).
