Upgrading conquered religion - is it possible?

Just taken Madrid in my another immportal attempt - now by Pericles.
I'm playing only'with own religion 'get or try' rule - no good spirit of game in any other case
So, I lost the prophet race (feel like Saladin ninjaed last one)
Now I have holy city, i can make apostles - but seems they cannot evangelize 'my' religion.
Should i eliminate Philip, or it's just impossible to rule foe's gods?

I don't know what you mean by "only'with own religion 'get or try' rule" but you say you "lost the prophet race" and therefore I presume you did not found your own religion. In that case, you are not eligible for a Religious Victory. You can choose to spread Madrid's religion to block another player from winning a religious victory, but you cannot evangelize any additional beliefs in your conquered religion -- it is not "your" religion, even if you eliminate Philip from the game.
