Upgrading Trireme

Hi, new Civ player here. I made a couple triremes in my current game in preparation for the tech that allows making caravels. I've read on numerous sites that you can upgrade triremes into caravels, but even after I attained the ability to create caravels in cities, my triremes show no option when I click on them to upgrade like my warriors did when I upgraded them. Is there something I'm missing? Thanks!

Are they within your borders? They need to be in your borders in order to work. Also, do you have any mods installed?

That was the weird thing: I moved them to within my borders and even one into a city, and still the option never appeared. However, as the game progressed and I got access to the frigate, I was able to upgrade my triremes into frigates but still not into caravels. On the flipside, I was unable to upgrade my caravels into frigates. I've been on vanilla Civ 5 with no mods.

I think that Tiremes are ranged units and caravels are not. Caravels will not upgrade to frigates, but destroyers. They have changed some of the ships to only be melee and no longer ranged. You can only upgrade a ship to the next available melee or ranged.

When it comes to the destroyer, there is/was a bug that allows those upgraded from the "pirate" to keep the ability to "capture" ships, while those from caravels do not.
