I was at the Uppsala Reggae Festival for the second time this year. Last year i got in for free, because my brothers football team was hired to construct the stage. So it feels kind of like i lost 500kr this year.:) But all in all there was alot of great artist playing great music there.
On Friday we watched the Uppsala based reggae band Natural Way, followed by Misty In Roots. Barrington Levi played last on the big stage, and he was excellent in getting the crowd to dance and sing along. The ever present smell of weed might have had a little something to do with it...:smoke:

I was looking forward to Saturday, when one of my favorites Max Romeo was playing. I was hoping he would do "Fari, Captain of my Ship", the greatest reggea song ever. Anyways, we arrived there at the festival round 16.00 hours to go see Bushman. Unfortunatley Bushman was cancelled. Feel free to speculate as to why he wasn't let in to the country ( ) So instead we went to see Rootvälta, at the small stage, and they were excellent. Played alot of good songs. After Rootvälta came Liondub, and their only redeeming quality was the female dancers they had...:D Anyways, we strolled around for a while before we went to the big stage and layed out our blanket. Gentleman was about so start, and it was a great start to the festival, he truly rocked the place.
My only complaint was his cover of Redemption Song (all reggae artists do a Bob Marley cover when doing concerts for some reason). When the words is supposed to go "Have no fear for atomic energy, for none of us can stop the time" He sang "have no fear for atomic energt, for George Bush cannot stop the time" Very cheezy indeed, but the crowd roared. Gentleman was from Germany by the way. After Germany came Swedish reggae legend Peps Persson, allthough im not a fan of his music, he was fun to look and listen to. (he has a very southern accent when he sings in Swedish) After Peps, we strolled around the place for a while before returning to the same place right before Max Romeo was about to start. When he came out i was thrilled hoping hed do Far, captain of my ship. He did all of his good songs, but no Fari, captain of ship unfortunately
Festival Fun Fact: I saw a skinhead there. He has the jeans shorts, the red suspenders, shaved head and a white t-shirt. Though, that could all be a coincidene, so the revealing clue was that he had the word "SKINHEAD" in capital letters on his shirt. A friend asked him if he hadn't showed up to the wrong festival he replied that he embraced the higher concept of skinheadism. Apparently, when the skinhead movement started, black people could be skingheads too. True or False, im not surprised if he got beaten up during the night.

Here are some pictures of this years festival, taken be a local newspaper:

I did not have a camera with me, and even if i did, i dont have a scanner. So all pictures i post will be taken by other people. If you have your own pictures from the festival, by all means, post them.

Disturbing.

Bah, you may fool the others, but you dont fool me. I think you secretely wanted to go to the festival, am i right? ;)

The only thing I like from the Carribean is the cricket team. The music adds a bit of atmosphere to the grounds there, but outside of that, my opinion of it is lower than my opinion of jazz.

Add that to my view of hippy music festivals, and we start to get a picture of the Darkshade view on "reggae".

I'd be absolutely shocked if anyone got beaten up at a reggae festival ever :smoke:

If I'd been in Sweden, I would absolutely have gone there !

A few of the best numbers, according to me:
Barrington Levy - Murderer: After a few sound problems, he came out to the sound of 2001: A Space Oddysey and rocked the place.
Gentleman - Dem Gone: You just feal great when you here it, same goes for his songs Run Away and Man A Rise.
Max Romeo: Iron Shirt (atleast i think thats what it was called) It was his best song he played during they day. I thought he would be a little better then he was, but it was till great.

Are there any reggae fans here at CFC at all?

Reggae is kewl. And Swedish girls look cute. Just as Austrian girls. But that wasn't really the issue, right?
