US Civil War Infantries (4/7/07)

Hi!

Here are two new rifleman, one for the Union and one for the Confederacy. I feel that the Union one can also be used as a generic American flavor rifleman. I would like to thank bernie14 for making the nice head. If anyone can find or make a suitable pair of buttons, I would be very tankful. Feel free to use them as you like and of course to give me credit.

Looks good, but I have a few comments:

-The boots go up to high for an infantryman. Show the pants going all the way down to the top of the foot. Boots that high were typically for cavalrymen.
-Though the gloves look nice, he shouldn't be wearing any. Those were mostly used by cavalrymen or officers (who had been riding).
-The pants on the Northern soldier should be blue. Maybe not the same shade, but not grey as they are now.
-Give him either shoulder boards or chevrons - Shoulder boards are only worn by officers, and chevrons by enlistedmen. He should definitely not have both! I would take both out, to better represent the front-line troops.
-Re-skin the gun, it's OK for later (1890+s) period when troops started to use bolt-action rifles, but not for the civil war time period.

Just some food for thought.

Yes, I think this is a reskinned Cavalry rider that has been dismounted, which would explain the high boots and gloves.

It could be useful if someone wanted to combine it with a horse to make dismounted cavalry which became more common later on in the war.

I wonder if the Rifleman gun would be more appropriate... I can't remember what it looks like off the top of my head, but I would imagine it would be better suited.

That said, I think the textures are very good, high quality textures.. a truly top shelf job there.

If you decide to revise this here's some pics of soldiers to take into consideration... note that the Confederates have a much less uniform.. err.. uniform. Lacking the resources of the North, it was often hard to provide all soldiers with a single uniform style. Although, the North too, in the earlier days, had less uniformity in the clothing of their troops as well.

EDIT: After going back and looking at the Rifleman unit, I'd say that applying the head you have currently to the Rifleman with a reskin would be perfect for making a Union soldier... changing the hat might be best for a Confederate soldier though a gray-version of a Union soldier would also suffice for a proper Confederate uniform for the purposes of a civ mod.

Nice unit, but yeah, you should change it to use the gun and animations from the Rifleman unit. The Riflemen in Civ4 is using a rifled musket, while the Infantry uses a more modern Winchester-like rifle that gets off several shots. As much as I can recall, there were not very many breech-loaded repeating rifles in the Civil War. Little Big Horn was the first battle where the US Army used a lot of them. So yeah, my opinion is you should change it.

one more thing,,,about those guys in the photos.
The uniforms are right on the money.
However,the soldiers themselves are TOO fat!
Remember,,the Real Soldiers had bad diets,,salt pork,beans,and hardtack.
There was no such thing like stopping at McDonalds for a Double QP,Supersized.
The Real Soldiers Walked where ever they went,i.e., lots of Excercise,
they did NOT arrive at the battlefield in pick up trucks and big ol SUVs.
Just look at photos of the real soldiers,from a history book,they were rather Lean.
I could go on.
BUT,,,,I quess the physiques of your models for the game Are much
more accurate than the guys in the photos.

Well, the reality is that very few Confederates had real uniforms... and those that had them usually bought their own which were made by private tailors or had them made by female family members. The Confederate government had enough things to buy for their troops without having to worry about uniforms. The Union, by comparison, had a lot more resources and could afford more uniforms for their soldiers. But even they, in the early days of the war, were not terribly consistent in their uniforms. A lot of the pre-war militia units had their own uniforms and wore them at the beginning. This created problems for the Confederacy especially since some of those uniforms their militias wore were blue... so friendly fire sometimes resulted. This was also true because the original Confederate flag looked a lot like the U.S. flag from a distance.

That's true. Although given the units look like cavalrymen, the Union cavalry would have a repeating breech-loader called the Spencer rifle.

As a Civil War specialist, i would love to help you.

Thing is, i have no experience with reskinning or designing new units (i would love to learn it tough). I could howver give you opinions or remarks on created units. Just send them trough and i'll be happy to check them out
