I'm sure I've mentioned this before but US comedy is in crisis, now I know there are some notable exceptions of exceptional comedy. But good grief why the formulaic processed crap that churns out of the banality machine. I mean the 80's yeah, The 90's yeah, but I could watch a US show from the 70's and the style and the nature of the comedy would be the same? Where have the idea men gone, what the hell is: That 70's Show? And why is it so dire? Why did the writers of Friends feel the need to write Friends two? What have you done with originality?

Is it just me or have you been steadily becoming disenfranchised with the insipid bilge being churned out by the so called comedy writers these days?! Or is it something to do with the fact that we only see the dross over here? I used to be a colossal fan of American comedy, but now pfft it's all gone pear shaped?!

Please show me something, anything that isn't the same old same old. Bear in mind I'm talking about prime time comedy, situation mainly. Or anything of that ilk, not stand up shows, the guys on the front line are as funny as ever. Maybe that's it, maybe in the UK the guys on the front line also write the comedy shows, they have to be different or unique or die? What is it? Come on someone write something that isn't metrosexual, a rewrite of an English comedy, or a load of trite idiots floating around having hilariously unoriginal problems with their lives with a laughter track that patently has no regard for humour.

Where are your Mighty Booshes? And Your little Britains, and your Black Books, and Your spaced? What happened? Did the spirit of comedy die, because his hat was on fire?

Now that's comedy, something that's different even if it is the same: What has happened to US comedy? Someone show me something that isn't formulaic garbage, the same old same old? Or doesn't it exist; have the grey men in their grey factories crushed the life out of comedy?

Yes,the US comedy is in crisis.
as It seems in last years, none of the American directors wants to film a comedy movie
Maybe they think to blend funny elements in action movies.

But Americans created one of the best comedy series ever. I´m talking about MASH. The movie was great, the book was great and the series even greater. Okay, that is 30 year old stuff.

Yeah I think Scrubs is an exception...

I don't watch that much tv anymore. But I still think the Simpsons are pretty funny..

The US Office
Arrested Development
Malcolm in the Middle
Scrubs...

but yeah its gone way downhill

Agreed with the sentiment, but to be honest, British comedy has seen better days as well. Extras and Little Britain are good, but not much of what else that's coming out of Britain in the past decade has really appealed to me. Coupling... what were you thinking?!?!?!?!

That said, the US hasn't put out a decent sitcom in over a decade and the current events humour is starting to get stale.

Of course, Canada hasn't done anything even remotely decent since Kids in the Hall. Comedy in general is very wonting these days.

Its a lot to do with reality TV, 90% of the slots formerly filled by comedy now feature "Britains fattest man" or "Wales' skinniest man" or "how to keep your kids un foul mothed"... improvement macht die working classes frei basically

Because the people who finance network TV can very rarely be convinced to sink their money into something new. So just about every show has to conform to a formula that has worked recently. So you don't often get anyone willing to take a chance on anything, and when you do, the advertisers are leery of supporting it. Once something new gets on and has some success, it's copied over and over until people are sick of it. Writers don't get paid a lot, so only mediocre writers work most sitcoms.

"disenfranchised?"

I don't think it means what you think it means.

Otherwise you're right.

"The Simpsons" was a never-miss for a long time but now isn't worth watching.
Everything else mentioned just rubs me the wrong way. I'm almost willing to put it down to a matter of taste, but just can't understand watching a show about characters you dislike. Anyone old enough to remember "The Jeffersons"? I absolutely HATED that show, because the main character was a complete jerk.

Sadly, that seems to be a favorite formula: A bunch of jerks being jerks we can laugh at. No thanks, how about clever interesting funny people, eg "Seinfeld"

I thought it was above average.

There's good comedy out there, you just have to find it. The American Office is great, and Arrested Development was brilliant. 30 Rock is one of the consistently funniest shows I've ever seen. People have said that My Name is Earl and Everybody Hates Chris are good, though I don't watch them. And while they're not sitcoms, The Daily Show and The Colbert Report are certainly comedy programs, and they're very funny.

Cleo

Everybody hates Chris is probably one of the worst sitcoms I have ever seen.

Blackface? Like that would go over good in the US.

Oh, and something else that can so often be found in British comedy is men dressing up as women. It's almost like they can never find any actresses or something.

Not even remotely funny until the 5 minute mark, and even then it isn't that funny.

Such a short skit, something you might see on late night shows.

Like the first video, the PC crowd would have a field day.
