US debt deal clinched

I think it's a tad weird that you're happy about this, as people are going to suffer as a result of this.

Just wondering, would you yourself be okay if it negatively impacted upon you?

The present generation must cut spending (or "suffer" as you put it ) in order to save future generations.

I'm sure NO ONE will suffer from the cuts.

Well, not real people anyway.

Sometimes, Jon Stewart strikes gold.

Yes, you are correct my danish friend. You are now qualified to understand and discuss American politics because you watch Jon Stewert... And Jon Stewart has struck gold. His program makes millions from condom and beer sponsers thanks to the hordes of viewers who tune in every night.

Moderator Action: Heed moderator warnings in future. "Your opinion is invalid because you aren't American" isn't acceptable.

Just as long as said cuts don't hit traditional republican key issues and interests, right?

Well, at least his show has a disclaimer up front that it's doesn't pretend to be a 'real' news program...
Where's the disclaimer on Fox News...? Oh right, they are presenting real, unbiased, journalism driven news...

PS: There are other US originated news sources available in Europe than Jon Stewart, in case people are in doubt.

Not really. The entire debt crisis was completely engineered. US debt has been increasing at a faster rate since 2008 then what was 'normal' because of the larger number of people qualifying for aid services. Spending a fair bit during a recession for expansionary effects is standard economic policy no matter where you are. Nixon, hardly a far left liberal socialist, endorsed that position.
Heavy cuts should be made after the GDP growth has returned to the trend line when the economy is in a healthier shape. Many programs have evolved in such a way as to be a bit too expensive for the benefit they produce, or don't apply the resources in the most efficient way. When the recession is over, fix those issues. Until then, try and keep the services at the same level and raise taxes to cover the increased spending where their impact will be the smallest.
Yes, the current spending lines aren't sustainable, but that is years, likely decades into the future. America has enough untapped assets to be able to pay off our debts (unlike Greece which doesn't have those untapped assets) should a massive calamity arise. Bad measures applied during bad times don't fix problems, they jury-rig them at best.

Thank the Republicans. Their goal from the time of Reagan is the elimination of the middle class and the slowing of the creation of wealth.

Ever since Jimmy Carter, Republicans have always had strong support among male blue collar workers. Please explain how eliminating these voters would benefit the GOP?

Personally I'm thinking British baby boomers getting free education, dentist and NHS and passing off the costs to next gen :(

And yet Republican policies have made it impossible for male blue collar workers to have a pay raise since the 70s. They may be getting many of the votes, but they are screwing the voters.

Not at all. Because that helps create the wealth that the next generation counts on for rising living standards.

Uh, no raises since the 70s?
On what planet?

No Cutlass, you can't take away my axe to grind. Old people had far more benefits then I do, and now this generation has to pay for there indulgence :(

OK. They got more benefits. And then refused to pay for you to get the same. That's a fine ax to grind, if you choose.

But it's still choice. The near socialist level of the British welfare state of decades ago may have been unsustainable. But that's because the economy was not in good condition. It was not necessary to take away all of the benefits to improve the economy. That was a choice. Just as having a bad economy before that was a choice.

Now granted a lot of these choices are made out of ignorance of the results of the actions they take. And a lot of these choices are taken out of ideological blindness.

But free education and dental is cheap for the payoff. And so if they will not offer that now, that's a choice. And a bad one.
