[The United States Defence Department is to create a new Northern Command aimed at defending America's home soil.
Defence officials say it is one of the biggest revamps of military command structures for nearly 40 years.

In remarks quoted by the French news agency AFP on Wednesday, US Defence Secretary Donald Rumsfeld called the development a "historic first".

He said NorthCom's commander would be responsible for land, air and sea defence, leading US defence forces operating within the United States in support of the civil authorities, AFP reported.

The changes are clearly a response to the 11 September terror attacks on New York and Washington, which the US Government blames on Osama Bin Laden's al-Qaeda militants.

But Pentagon officials in Washington said the restructuring also reflected global changes since the end of the Cold War.

The changes are expected to take effect on 1 October.

New role for army

Mr Rumsfeld said earlier that the new command was aimed at better meeting "the challenges of the 21st century".

Correspondents say the new command signals a recognition that the military would be called to play a decisive internal security role in the event of an attack on the United States involving weapons of mass destruction.

The US military has previously been barred from engaging in domestic law enforcement under the 1878 Military Law, passed in the aftermath of the Civil War.

NorthCom will be responsible for the continental United States and Alaska, as well as Canada, Mexico and portions of the Caribbean, said General Richard Myers, chairman of the US Joint Chiefs of Staff.

Any thoughts anyone?

Do you think this is a wise move?
Do you think it is justified?
Do you support the proposals or are you opposed?

Yes it is wise, justified, and not at all a problem.
It is as Greadius said: simply an exercise in policy already made.
Different commands are formed to fit different circumstances, ie the creation of Central Command to focus upon the Middle East.
Why anyone would have a problem with this, I know not, but, as they say, some people will protest at anything... ;)

Darn right I'll Protest! :D

They're putting the headquarters in Colorado instead of here in Nebraska!

Just because the Cheyenne Mountain Complex is more survivable... erm...

Just because because NORAD there has decades of experience in coordinating multi-national defense... erm...

Rats!

I'm deepley insulted, and I hope mexico is too!

Canada will have its OWN military defence. any american trying to tell us what we can and cant do will not get away with it so easily. so you know what? thanks, but no thanks. we will go it alone.

Yeah, that would be the point sailing by. This does not mean that the US has created a command with the mission of defending Canada or Mexico. It is a command set up to take care of current and potential military operations in NA. This is the same thing as the command in charge of the Middle East. Doesn't mean we are proclaiming that we will defend every country in the ME, just that we have one centralized place responsible for the planning and command of operations that occur there.

I would guess that the focus of this command would include border security, working with both neighbors in that regard, tracking of terrorists, etc. There will also be contingency plans put into place for all manner of likely and unlikely events. A coup in Mexico, Militia in Idaho, a call for help from Canada to put down the massive unrest on PEI, things like that.

Geez, sometimes I think some of you around here are a little too paranoid. The US is not hatching some master plan to steal Canadian Sovereignty. We gave up on that almost 200 years ago.

I don't care, just as long as they continue to obey commands from Winnipeg. Wait, Winnipeg ordered this. Nevermind.

I think that the USA home defense strategy should be to advertise how much weaker Canada defenses are. "Bomb Canada, you might survive the attempt"

This reminds me of the Farside where the bear in the crosshairs is pointing at the other, unsuspecting bear. Maybe we should start an ad campaign highlighting Canada's virtues. Some of the resentful people in the world are bound to shift focus to the 'exploitative Canadians'.
