USA going backwards in time?

Well, Grandpa always said that things have been going downhill since 1960. He also said that the "good old days" actually sucked.:old:

no kidding. every period in the U.S. has some negative aspect to it that people try not to remember.

Two hundred years ago, global warming didn't exist.
Two hundred years ago, AIDS was completely unknown.
Two hundred years ago, George Bush Jr. didn't exist.
Two hundred years ago, nuclear weapons didn't exist.

There are a few BIG ways in which things were better off in the past. True, not everybody will think all of the above are good or bad things, but you get the idea.

In some ways, backwards is the right direction to go.

BUT--when you actually start arguing with other people about WHICH issues we should go "backwards" on??? Well, that's a whole different ball game. :)

200 years ago we didn't have:

-Walmart
-Cars
-Computers (and their addictive games)
-TV
-Condoms

So all your points are nullified. Nyah. :p

And that, Chaz, is why I wrote this:

Posting Rule #285: always cover your ass. :)

Global warming, AIDS, George Bush Jr., and nuclear weapons are all bad things regardless of how many good things you list (I personally don't think George Bush Jr. is a bad President, but, again, you get the idea).

At one point in Europe, there was not a witch hunt--then, one day later, there was. Bad thing. So let's keep going forwards on womens' rights and television, and move backwards on witch hunts. I say backwards here, because as time goes on, I see more and more witch hunts, not fewer--in many Third World countries, and right here in CFC, in certain thread topics that cause people to get homicidal.

Actually, it was introduced in the 1600s, I believe. A certain English king had a variant with a sheep intestine was dipped in oil or something?

I knew someone would bring this up, with intestines and everything!

I was specifically referring to latex trojan (magnums for the real men :mischief:) and KY jelly.

Hmmm... at one point in time, Protestantism did not exist. This could be fun.

America's golden age is usually given as 1945-early 1970s

Except that 1982 to the present day has seen the steadiest economic boom in history, for the U.S.

Two small recessions in 25 years, possibly a third shortly.

Edit: U.S.'s share of world GDP was higher in the late 90's than in 1960.

Mean life statisfaction in the USA peaked in the 60s, I've heard. That's probably the golden age of america.

It probably could have been if hippies hadn't tried to tear the country in two.

Ummmm No. Not even close. For multiple reasons. One, the US place in the world is less that it was in the earlier era. We finished WWII with half the world's economic output. The portion declined as we rebuilt the world. But the key point to that statement is that we rebuilt the world! In the earlier era virtually all Americans were made greatly better off over time in both absolute and relative terms. Int he later, half the population is much better off, but 1/2 is only better off to the extent that the core tech of society is better. Their real incomes have been stagnant. In the earlier era, we did all that while decreasing the total debt load of each American. In the later we mortgage away our children's and grand children's future for the purpose of accomplishing less.

Yeah, I'd personally be inclined to add this one to the list too (and Catholicism also, Classical_Hero :) ). But, a lot of other people would not. That's the reason I added that one bit of CYA.

But if you look at the Big Picture, the country is always improving in some ways and getting worse in others. You should always be willing to consider going backwards on some things, when it appears that going forwards is the wrong direction.
