This basic Strategies article by BillChin I found to be excellent. Building a few cities with barracks followed by plenty of immortals / swordsmen then beating your enemies senseless. I was never that aggressive to start off, but this changed my mind, ok you fall behind in the beginning of the game but not to worry you soon get into the lead buy destroying civs and pinching cities.
Enjoyed reading your posts on how badly you though you were doing brought back some memories of my own poorer efforts.
