Let's say that your opponent has built coastal fortresses in it's major cities and has also discovered rocketry...

Then :

-Your ships can't attack cities.
-Batleships are vulnerable to dozens of missiles as soon as they approach the coast (I still don't know where the AI finds the time to build them)

This situation makes almost all ship units useless for attacking purposes. All exept one...AEGIS CRUISER!

AEGIS cruiser is not vulnerable to Missiles or Air units (it's the other way round actually) it has a fairly good firepower, and is a good defender for your cities that are attacked by many air units; in fact two vet. AEGIS Cruisers make the city untouchable by air.

This strategy of course is not working in cases like the pacific map where you must have a big fleet to protect your transports.
I use it a lot in scenarios where the opponent is much stronger than me and I can't beat him at sea.

I think you put too much faith into aegis cruisers. They're not directly vulnerable but they've probably an indirect weakness. Nukes with their spread effect area. I've never tried to find out whether that rule worked in Civ2 but I think it's the same thing than Civ1. When you launch a nuke on a maritime unit (a boat) everything in the neighbouring areas are also destroyed. So imagine you're patrolling with your sea fleet spread as shown below w:

B B B
B T
B B B

where B are you aegis and T another non-aegis boat. If the nuke wins against A, you will lose everything around. All your glorious fleet. The idea of stacking them in 1 square is not better since you take the risk of losing them all if an enemy bomber or a sub spots you.

Anyway I don't often have a huge maritime armada. I've just have a bunch of transports. All my forces are ground or air units.

Aegis is great.
You need to have a mix of weaponry with land, and sea, and air.
All have their weaknesses, and strengths.

You stack 2 aegis and 2 battleships and nothing can sink it.Cept.....

The poor ai will never use a nuke against units.Humans aren't so cooperative.

The ai is given a bulk amount of sheilds to use every turn.It doesn't have to "build" stuff.Thats why it seems to have a built in Leo's of sorts.
ie-ai discovers Automobile and out sails Mr Battleship immediately. You can see this by investigating cities or using the cheat menu.

-Firstly the AI is so stupid
cwm33.gif
that it will never use nukes against ships even if you have a big armada...

-Secondly for me if you have some AEGIS it's not usefull to have a big fleet

Thirdly a sub can't win an AEGIS fortified in a city.

Aren't real world Ageis cruisers able to carry missiles? Why can't they in civ???

AEGIS is very vulnerable to submarines on the sea and ships in port have hp and firepower reduced to 1 when attacked.

i love ships, when there's enough water on the map for them to matter.

i make huge fleets with a few transports and some subs with missles and carriers, and then i wipe out all of my enemies defenses. then my few ground units can just walk through their empire.

Well to win the battle between a ship and a city that has C.Fort. the only ways I can think of are:

-Destroy the fort. w/ a spy
-Attack a city that is defended only by fanatics, spies, engineers....

Well you can also destroy all the strong defenders ( M.Infantry, A.Troops...) with your Howitzers but after that who needs the ships anyway?

why not just take the city with the spy instead?

There's a bug in the game. Whenever I try to destroy a wall or coastal fortress, it says it's dangerous cause it's the capital! So I can only bribe it, because conquering it would be impossible.

I've never EVER actually had a full naval war. The ONLY time I EVER build ships is for transporting my spies. Bribing is the way of the future!

lenin... naval war is fun! try a random landform map with small landmass... and then make a huge navy. it's the best part of the game IMO

Aegis cruisers are the US Navy's premiere anti-missile defense cruiser. They have two fore and two aft anti-missile batteries that can launch an anti-missile at a combined fire rate of 1 missle every other second. They are primarily used for carrier defense, but in wartime would make fantastic convoy escorts for air defense. I believe they are also outfitted with CIWS (Close-In Weapons System), a radar guided cannon that is fully computer guided, and uses a powerful and sensitive radar to shoot down incoming missiles with unguided shells. Sort of the equivalent of a sniper shooting down an AS9 Soviet anti-ship missile, but at computer speed. I'm not sure if the Aegis platform has CIWS, or just the carriers.
(Uh, I read a lot of Tom Clancy novels, and I collect books on weapons of war.)

Now was that civilized? Fun, yes, but in no sense civilized."

Aren't they able to carry cruise missiles?
And I thought that they had the PHALANX missile defense system.

People who bribe as their principle method of "war" in Civ should be beaten with a stick and hung by their thumbs.
Well, maybe not that severe, but it is a wimpy way to play.

That's not true Vlad--you read it incorrectly. Destroying city walls in any city OR attempting industrial sabotage in an ememy capital is riskier, but not impossible at all. My unscientific observation tells me that Vet. Spies will do it 1 out of 3 or 4 tries. Of course you'll probably lose a bunch of spies, but it's definitely worth it.
