Using a notebook as a GPS

Anyone have any anecdotes of using a notebook computer as a GPS?

I debating go that route rather than a pure Garmin device (though Garmin does make a USB-GPS as well), and would also like to use MS's Streets and Maps with it.

I had contemplated this at some point. In the end I wound up buying a Tom Tom GPS instead of MS streets. I am glad I did
