Hello all, too bad my first post here is to be a bug report...

After installing the patch 1.61, civ started to freeze my computer completely after a while of playing.
I mean completely, I could not get the os (winXP)
to react in anyway, and the only button to have any effect is the reset...
It seems that this freezing doesen't occur in any set time of play, sometimes
it happens just after 15minutes, sometimes I get a good hour of play...
Also, it doesent seem to matter at which stage of the game I'm going.
Only exiting the program completely and reloading seems to alleviate the problem for a while..
Exiting to the startup screen did not seem to "zero" the countdown to lockup.
I have tried both windowed and full screen mode, Both present the same problem.

It shouldn't be a question of not meeting the minimum requirements, as my comp. is spexed for video editing (although a few years old...) Might be a memory problem? I have 1GB installed, and the bootup "test run" has reported no errors... My video card is ATI radeon 9600, and has not presented any of the anomalies reported here in the previous patches... propably because I got the game after the last major update, which obiously fixed the ati-problematics. But could it be, thet 1.61 has brought those problems back?

Come to think of it, doesent this kind of complete lockup occur also if the prosessor overheats? I have An amd athlon XP2700+ on a MSI motherboard...
But surely this would occur while running the processor-heavy editing tools
if it was a problem of overheat... And why would it manifest after a patch update?

Also, I note many people mentioning "autoclear cache" here.. How do I set the program to perform this? Just in case it might do the trick....

If anyone can help, I'd be most gratefull... All this rebooting can't be good for my computer.. ;)

your description sounds like a problem with your graphics card. Try to get some ATI tools to check the onboard temperature of the gfx card (not sure, if the ATI 9600 supports it, though).
Furthermore, you should check your computer case about dust, especially the vents.

On my NVidia 6600GS set, I notice an increase of the fan speed after 15-30 minutes. This seems to be clearly related to calculation workload, to it would be understandable that your problems only occur now and then.

Ok... I tried the tool to monitor the card's temperature.
Starting the game, the temp. was about 57c, rising up to 64-65:ish
levels. It was at 60 when the computer froze again... So propably the problem is not related to graphics card temperature...

I'm also inclined to think that the problem is not so general in nature, as I
have nothing of the sort when running much heavier software from several hard-disks simultaneously...

But then again, it's never a bad idea to give the old machine an internal dusting... ;)

Any other ideas?

I'm also having this issue since patch 1.61 with a NVidia 6800GT.

I tried several nvidia drivers, even a bios update, but i'm still experiencing this display freeze after a variable time, can be 15mn, or can be few hours without problem.

Temperatures are kinda normal (I mean play fear for 3 hours you'll get far more heat inside the tower), heatsinks are dust cleaned...

Considering your very same experiences, I have a strong feeling that the 1.61 patch is the only cause for this problem (never occured before).
