What kind of problem am I facing when saved games won't load, including the most recent saved game and three earlier saved games that were each saved a few turns prior to the latest saved game?

It seems to me that if the system was able to process through a turn, save the game, and then move on to the next turn, that saved game should be clean and uploadable no matter what happens after that game was saved.

So my question is, what type of problem is indicated when a saved game won't load, especially when that saved game was not the most recent save (as the most recent save could have been corrupted during the save process...)?

Of course, I didn't change my system or settings between those last two saves. And it seems fruitless to discuss my hardware specs, game settings, drivers, drivers, drivers (I've never known I had so many drivers on this system until I started updating everything to try to get Civ 4 to run.) However, I can say that these saved games are about 277MB and I've played games that have reached 700+MB before they started crashing. And I clear the cache on every game load.

Thanks for your time. I'm amazed that I've stayed calm throughout all of this. Maybe I've just given up. But this game ROCKS! when it works - so I keep trying.

I've had this problem a couple of times and I realized I was to fast to exit the game after saving it, so I guess the game didn't save properly. Now I'm a litte bit more patient before exiting.

I have found that if you start a new game with all the same options from your saved game, then when in the new game load the old saved game it works.

It might just be that the system cannot load so much info all in one shot. Perhaps it needs to get the game going and stable then drop in all the info from your saves. It works for me. Hope it helps you.

Thanks for replying... I think I figured out my problem.

I had to put a new clock battery onto my motherboard and in doing so, I reset my BIOS settings (oops). I tried a new setting, figuring I would fix it if the game crashed (it was the setting about graphics where you choose between UC and USWC). USWC may not work for me. So I reset that to UC.

I also reduced (in-game) my Anit-Aliasing from 4 to 0.

Now it seems to run fine, sort of. I'll start a new thread asking about whether anyone else experience periodic crashes when running Media Player underneath the game. I enjoy listening to my own music while playing - but the system seems to crash the most when Media Player is playing underneath. After making my two adjustments, I loaded the game with Media Player playing. It crashed.

So I play silently now, for now.

Cheers,
Spocko
