When you gain a free technology the sience advisor (which asks you what to research next) still shows that tech in the list and doesnt take into consideration that you have the tech already.
That means if you take a free tech which enables you to research another tech, that "new" tech is not on the list.
It is however among the icons on the top. (where the research bar is)
The only way to research that "new" tech is by going into a info screen about a tech, by rightclicking on one in the list, and while in the info screen clicking on the icon on the top (where the research bar is)

To reproduce:
- Play the game until you research a tech that will give you a free tech.
- Choose a free tech that will enable you to research a new tech that you were unable just before.
- see what i mean in the list with new question "What to research next"
