Hey folks! I started a new game as Germany. I don't have too much concrete feedback on the game so far, I'm mostly just trying to get back into the swing of Civ5, it has been years since I last played.

I'm usually not an aggressive player, but I feel I need to be in this game. I'm currently at turn 350, in 1217 AD. I invaded Russia right after they spawned, took Kherson and got St. Petersburg in the peace deal (which later fell to the Vikings). I also invaded the Dutch after they spawned and took Amsterdam. The French & English declared war on me so I'm currently fending them off. Here is the current situation in Europe:

My one constructive comment so far is that the values on the left side of this panel don't match up:

Yea... maybe I should have. The English retook it and then decided to raze Hamburg. :(

Another question, probably a basic Civ5 question. Chariots upgrade into knights. I suppose they lose their ranged attack then. If I have promotions to extend my range, that's just useless now? Will I be keeping this super-promoted chariot with me to the modern age?

Why not raze Amsterdam? I don't see much value given the proximity of Hamburg
I don't think you can raze other Civilizations' capital cities. Is that hard-coded into the game, or should that be possible?

Hmm, strange. I've been at war with England for a long time, but now I don't see them in the diplomacy menu.
I think you need to have their units adjacent to your territory, or your units in theirs. Leaders pop in and out of contact quickly in my experience.

Another observation is that cities are extremely hard to hold. It takes a very long time for their HP to recover, their defenses are rather low, and since most/all buildings are destroyed when a city is taken it takes quite a while to get walls/courthouse/etc built up. I just built my second courthouse in Amsterdam and was one turn away from getting walls when England declared war on me yet again and took the city right away with their navy.

oh, you're right.
Then I guess this city is a big annoyance for France and Germany. Either a tile thief or a redundant city.
I guess that sort of advises Germany to not make a northwestern city in favor of a more inland one located at the more southerly tripoint between the two cattle and the truffles...

The AI is very aggressive. I’ve started my share of wars so far, but I never get a breather. I’ve had several rounds of wars with England & France, but then England, Spain, Arabia, and I all carved up France together. Not long after they were finished, England, Spain (who I was friends with and had a research treaty with) and Ottomans all invaded me.

I’ve basically been in a constant state of war since the game began.

Lol, welcome to Europe!

Could there be a city project available from the start of the game (year -4000) to repair your city in addition to its natural increase? Maybe 5% of total health per turn?

Still struggling mightily with my Germany game. The Arabs & Ottomans invaded (they had recently been enemies and Arabs had recently been friends, now teaming up against me). Arabs took Paris and destroyed Brest. I fought off the Ottoman invasion retook Paris and was just about to finally take the fight to the Turks when England invaded, took Amsterdam. Then Paris, St. Petersburg and Kherson all revolted to become Nazis. Ugh. I was down to just Berlin and a Warsaw puppet state. Then I took Klausenberg from the Ottomans. I'm close to giving up.

How is stability calculated? Does anyone have any tips for how to avoid collapses and to actually maintain any level of peace with a civ? Being at constant war with enemies in every direction makes it just impossible.

On a separate note, it was said elsewhere that capital cities can't be razed, but when Austria spawned they took my city of Wein as their capital. The Turks were able to raze that.

which difficulty level are you playing at? Is this your first game at RFC civ v? I am asking because it took me some time to 'learn the game'. It may help to lower the difficulty and get more experience under the belt. Which part of the overall stability are you struggling with?

I played a few turns as Rome in v94, but yea, this is essentially my first game. I'm definitely still learning the game, and relearning Civ5 overall. I'm playing on Prince. That was the default listed when I booted up the game. Is this like Civ4 RFC where each civ has a different default difficulty?

As for stability I'm mostly struggling with the opaqueness of it. For the first time I took a peek at the stability map, that's informative. Are there any other factors that affect stability?
