So Im going on vacation to Punta Cana, Dominican Republic, and while mostly it is a tourist resort of laying on the beach and staring at water for 8 hours (awesome after the brutal Cleveland winter we had!) I also wanted to know if there was any cool historic or cultural things to see there.

Anyone know if there is anything of historical interest to see/do there that is near the Punta Cana area?

Since the currency is the peso and the peso is also the currency in Mexico, then you could say that the Dominican Republic can be of either mayan Aztec or Spanish, even.

Nice Punta Cana. We almost went two months a go but it just turned out to be two expensive for seven day and reality that lose a day there and a day back. Plus the logistics of connecting flights. If you miss your second plane you are screwed. Which resort are you staying at.
