A figure perhaps loved by Americans as much as Czechs, presided over Czechoslovakia's transition out of communism and into the US sphere (leading the way for other countries in eastern Europe), as well as the peaceful division of the country into Czech Republic and Slovakia.

Hardly shocking, he was looking extremely tired at the celebration of his 75th birthday two months ago.

He was the face of Velvet revolution and one of its symbols. His stance was often ridiculed as idealistic, but he was person firmly rooted in his believes, which heighten his greatness in comparison of the present malaise of Czech politic.

    RIP

One of the most visible faces from the sea change that swept Europe in 89. It's too bad he had to witness the fracturing of his country, but I guess that was kind of impossible to avoid. RIP, sir, you were a class act.

He was conscience of nation. Last time I have seen him on opening of theatre in Trutnov year ago. He seemed extremely tired, had problem with speech but still had good thinking and humor.

A man such as this' death should have as much respect as the other liberators of oppressed peoples the world over. Rest in Peace.

May a hundred more follow in his footsteps - the struggle for liberty is far from over.

A great man left whom I always admired for his persistent struggle for freedom.

Before today, I hardly knew him. Did a quick reading of his Wikipedia page. It is a sad day for the Czech and the Slovak nations.

This excerpt says better than I can myself how I felt about this "conscience of the nation", "champion of liberty" and "decent guy".

In short, I liked him not.
    Good riddance.

You know, when local lefties hate him, they don't use lies. I will write some rebuttal at Thursday or Friday.

A bad week indeed, first Hitch (I  ), then Havel (I   again).

At least the Universe decided to counter-balance this loss of goodness in the world by killing Kim Jong-il. Too bad Havel didn't get to hear about it, as they announced it a day after his death.

A great man indeed, one of those lucky enough to see their "life's mission" completed. He's been through it all - born to the First Republic, Nazis, the occupation, the Communist coup, the totalitarian era, the Prague Spring, the Soviet invasion, the "Normalization" that followed, and then finally the Velvet Revolution. I can't even imagine the joy he and so many others must have felt when the regime had fallen. I was too little to really know what was happening, only that it was somehow important to my parents.

His first New Year's address to the nation as president is unforgetable. Everyone should read it many times over and memorize its main points, especially the Western admirers of Soviet-style socialism:

    :goodjob: and :salute:

Two countries which still haven't officially reacted to Havel's death are Russia and China.

    Figures

Well he was obvious enemy for them. It would be like South Korea/USA sending condolences to North Korea.
