Vanilla load problem

Hi all, longtime lurker, first time caller. So I was having some of the basic bug issues with Civ 4 vanilla on my 1st-generation MacBook Pro (1.83 GHz Intel Core Duo, 1 GB RAM, running 10.4.11) and downloaded 1.74; after doing so, I couldn't even open the game. The icon bounced once or twice in the dock and then disappeared (I don't have it in the dock permanently).

So I read there were some 1.74 issues, so I uninstalled, reinstalled from the DVD, installed 1.61revC, and the same thing happened. So I uninstalled and tried to run it without any patches--no luck. Again, the icon bounces, the DVD doesn't even spin up, and the icon disappears again.

Any idea what is wrong?

Try checking your console for errors (if you dont know what this is, I or someone else will explain)

Ok, so I tried it again and yes, an error turned up on my console. Here's what the crash log looks like--it's all Greek to me.

Hi, welcome :wavey:

I've deleted your other post to avoid answers appearing in both threads.

The program is failing right at the start. What happens if you don't have the DVD loaded? If you get the "Please insert the original disc" message, then we know it's getting past the DVD checking stage. If you don't, then it may be failing to find your DVD drive.

When you reinstalled, did you also delete the following items?

- the preferences file at <Home>/Library/Preferences/com.aspyr.civ4.plist
- the support folder at <Home>/Library/Application Support/Civilization IV/
- the Civ4 folder in your <Home>/Documents/ folder (moving out any mods or saves you want to keep first)

If not, try doing so now.

So, bizarrely I seem to have got the exact same problem in the last few days. Though I've been running with the 1.74 upgrade for ages.

It makes no difference if the dvd is loaded or not, so its not getting that far. I've tried reinstalling as well, and did remove all the files you list, but with no change.

The drive itself seems fine - I can play other dvds and cds. I'm as stuck as conor610.

When I went in to try to delete the folders you mentioned above, I couldn't find them anywhere after I reinstalled, and now they won't reappear. What can I do?

I'm having the same problem. I'm pretty sure that it has to do with the Quicktime 7.6 update that just came out. Someone on the Apple support forums was having an issue like this:

Any ideas how to fix this? How do I go about reverting to the older version of Quicktime?

My answers to AlanH are the same as TJC's and torchic's: it's not getting to the DVD stage, and on the reinstall, the other files seem not to be there. Odd.

Those files and folders are only created when the game runs. Since you are not getting that far, they won't be re-built.

@Farkshinsoup: Welcome :wavey:

I am running OS X 10.5.6. I updated to QT 7.6 yesterday, and my Civ4 v1.74 still launches to the point where it asks for the disc if it isn't mounted. If it is, it launches to the display prefs dialog, which I have set to always display on launch. QT 7.6 is not causing any problems here. Maybe it's specific to some display cards? Mine's an nVidia 8600GT in a MacPro.

Same problem here with Warlords... but I tried to run it from an old version of 10.5.6... I'll have to check the QT version on that drive... but here is my report:

Oh... I just confirmed.. .I have NOT installed the new QT update, so that isn't the problem. I don't have any idea what it could be. I too have deleted everything... reinstalled... nothing runs.

I've got a ATI RadeonX1600 running in a Macbook Pro - I'm running 10.4.11. Maybe that's got something to do with it.

Hmm, its odd how quicktime affects the game. I got a very similar error to the rest of the people in my mod, but it was attributed a missing art define for a civ in my XML! :lol:

Anyway, here is my error and it seems the difference in the error is found near the top (highlighted in Red)

Good Morning,

1st post so be gentle! I had the same problem as everyone else with CivIV crashing before it even started. Using the information from the apple forums i reinstalled quicktime by downloading it from the apple web site (not software update). I then restarted in safe mode and civ started up - great. I then restarted the computer normally and civIV works!!!

I don't know what was wrong or quite what fixed it but it's working without having to remove any of the software on my machine -yipeeee.

Yes thats what i did. Just go to the applications folder and dump quicktime in the trash. Then restart and download quick time from here http://www.apple.com/downloads/

Then I restarted the computer in safe mode: see here http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1564

Once booted i checked to see if Civ would start and it did!

Shutdown and then Rebooted normally.
