I might go out on a limb here, but somebody has to call it, so I will.

Vanilla/Warlords modding is dead!

Yes, we have reached the BTS-era (pling! insert imaginary era-popup here) and Warlords is becoming obsolete, just like Warlords once made Vanilla obsolete.

All the big mods (FFH, Visa, TR) are already in the process of porting their mods to BTS and will probably leave older versions for what they are.

Of course, you can still make a mod for Warlords, but what are the changes your mod will be played? Active CIV players (the actual civfanatics) will, in all likelihood, switch to BTS, if they haven't done so already. These are the same players who might install a mod and there is a big change that they will prefer a BTS mod.

I have just finished working on an update of a big popular Vanilla/Warlords mod

Spoiler :
Nope, I won't tell you which one...yet

and already had done some BTS modular stuff. Going back to Warlords I really noticed the difference between non-modular and modular and what a drag it was working with huge XML files (instead of the modular huge ammount of folders and files). It was a typical scrolling hell!

So what do you think? Is Vanilla/Warlords modding dead? Or at least dying?

Edit: I say mods, but I actually mean playable modpacks, not small mod components or such.

Yawwwwn... yea this announcement is about a month late

I'll disagree with the point that Warlords made Vanilla obsolete, but yeah...why would anyone mod for vanilla now?

Granted, because of the current state of BTS (waiting for 3.13), we are in a Limbo era right now.

That's my point. Is it late or is better late than never? In Woodelf's latest edition of New CIV 4 downloads there were still some "old version" mods announced, which sort of means there are actually people out there working on Vanilla/Warlords mods.

The question is: should these people continue getting it right for Vanilla/Warlords (for example FFH, Total Realism) or forget about it and move on to BTS versions? Is it worth to update old versions?

BTS is so much better than the other two versions and one you get used to it is easier to mod. Why mod the other versions? Also I've found porting an excellent way to look back over everything to remove persistent bugs and other issues.

I totally agree, this is the time to clean up, but then again there is some pressure in releasing BTS versions from mod players, so persistent bugs might be ported as well with copy-pasting.

True but most of my bugs are from my sloppy programing. By having to basically reprogram the mod I can make everything more stable and effective.

Amen to that, Im rewriting FfH for exactly this reason. Well, that and I was a noob programmer when I started FfH (now Im a Noob+ programmer).
