"Venezuelan dictator Nicolas Maduro is giving guns to upwards of 400,000 of his supporters in hopes of squashing opponents’ demands for free and fair elections."

"On Sunday night, Maduro ordered the National Bolivarian Militia, a coalition of armed socialist civilians empowered to enforce Maduro’s will, into the streets to stem the tide of opponents calling for elections to replace him. He promised “a gun for every militiaman” and the quadrupling of his civilian force, from 100,000 to 400,000, as soon as possible."

"Venezuela banned the sale of guns to private citizens in 2012 during the tenure of the late dictator Hugo Chávez."

"The law has prevented most civilians from keeping firearms, though they are readily available on the black market, and criminals are known to be well-armed. Caracas is the world’s deadliest peacetime city, with shootings a regular occurrence nationwide. In prisons, inmates often keep firearms and, in one notable incident, made a cell phone video showing off an arsenal of weapons to honor a dead thug."

Reminds me of the Communist guerrillas that Castro and Allende sent into my homeland in Chile, and of course the Socialist cowards in Venezuela made sure to take all of the guns before their slaughter begins.

In Chile we were so very fortunate to have a savior like Pinochet who saved millions from such a horrific fate.

*The intent of this thread is to discuss the events unfolding in Venezuela and the parallels to other events of Communist aggression and slaughter in Latin American countries, such as Chile.

Don't worry, Maduro's grip is slipping. He'll never be able to reach Pinochet levels of tyrannic murderousness.

The estimated number of dead during Pinochet's government is about 3,000 over roughly 2 decades in a country of nearly 18 million, which is very low. 3,000 deaths over 17 years is approximately 200 per year and most of these people were actively fighting against the government. They were really bad people.

Estimates for Cuba (a country of ~11 million) over about 3 decades range between 35,000 and 141,000... (according to biased Communist fetishists/liberal elitist estimates) which fails to even mention all of the dead directly caused by Castro funding and arming Communist guerrillas and sending them into much of Latin America.

Castro tops the dead in Chile tenfold by even the most biased of estimates by communist sympathizers and liberal academics.

Genocide Olympics are not my forte, to be sure. Granted this isn't exactly genocide, but we've not come this far by bothering with such minutiae, have we?

I'm still waiting for the Venezuelian supreme court to declare all opposition parties illegal and make Maduro president for life.

The way they are going, civil war is pretty much inevitable.

Why don't you go there and become him?

What?! You mean the borders are only open to Hispanics as long as they vote left and support the same socialist policies that has lead to so much brutality and suffering throughout Latin America?

I thought the left was suppose to love Hispanics.

You want a power hungry strongman to replace a power hungry strongman?

"The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time, with the blood of patriots and tyrants."
- Thomas Jefferson

"I say this as the President of a country that looked to Europe for the values that are written into our founding documents, and which spilled blood to ensure that those values could endure on these shores."
- Barack Obama

Depending on the conditions prevailing in a country functioning democracy is not always an option. Even Obama recognizes this truth.

No. I mean if you fell that Venezuela needs a Pinochet and you seem to be a fanboy, why not become the next Pinochet? Jabbering away on the internet from a dorm room in Canada seems to be a waste of your talents.

So much hostility. The left can't stand it when a member of one of their "pet groups" refuses to parrot their socialist/communist mantra.

I have long since graduated and work full time, unlike many on the left who frequent this forum from their dorm rooms/indoctrination centers.

Chile was very fortunate to have had Pinochet. If it wasn't for his steady hand Chile would be a third world country like its neighbors Peru and Bolivia, where thousands die every year from poverty, or worse it would have been a Communist hell were countless tens of thousands were slaughtered each decade as in Cuba.

You can keep repeating that until the end of eternity, but most of the people in your country hated Pinochet and you know it.

Not from my experiences.

And your country is also my country now. I'm a Canadian citizen.

Looking into it further:

While most Chileans abhor the human rights abuses committed under his rule, Gen Pinochet still has a small but ardent group of right-wing supporters who regard him as a hero.

Your music video didn't convince me.

"Why don't you do it?"
"I'm too busy strawmanning"
