Version 1.0.1.221a Available

The red splotches are known bug. They'll be fixed.. sometime.

I expect it's smoother in full screen than windowed mode.

I get the impression that the red/white chequered tablecloth reports are new, and are not the same as the old, original small red splodges that we've had from day one.

FWIW, I play the game under both past and current versions on a 24" iMac (mid 2009 edition) with a 3.06Ghz Core 2 Duo, ATI HD 4-something (4875?), 4GB RAM, and Snow Leopard, and it runs just fine.

Map loading can sometimes be a bit slow - textures look quite pixelated for a few seconds when going to another section of the map you haven't viewed in a while - but other than that, the game runs perfect with no glitches, video or otherwise.

Only new on Mac, but not on PC. The solution has been found, but i have no idea how this would translate to a Mac, since it's a problem with the drivers or the display (not sure).
Whatever, the related thread is here, proposed solution which worked at least for one person is in post #11.

I'm pretty much convinced no system can run it smooth on a Mac. I'm playing it at 1920x1200 windowed on a Mac Pro 12 core 2.93 Ghz with 32GB memory and a Radeon 5870 yet on a huge map it's still not completely smooth and I end up with those strange graphics glitches every so often (red/white squares or map tiles that are grey).

No idea what Aspyr tests it on but it sure as hell isn't a Mac you can buy from Apple...

Sandy Bridge iMac running a i7-2600 @3.4GHz would give smooth frame rate at 1920x1200

Well the graphics chip in the new iMacs are still mobile versions of the AMD cards and from what I can gather not as fast as the 5870, so I'm not sure what you're basing that on. I'm sure if I turned the detail down or ran on smaller maps it would be nice and smooth, but I really shouldn't have to...

Forgot to add - I play the game with this machine at max resolution (1920) and all graphics settings on High. Anyone with a Mac from the last 2 years should be able to run this game maxed out.

Runs great on my 2-year-old Mac Pro 4-core 2009 with a 4870, so you have some issue. I run with everything turned up to the highest setting on graphics. If your 12-core won't handle it, I'd be checking your hardware or something. I play at 1920x1080 on a 24" widescreen monitor.

So, yes, it *does* run fine on some machines stock from Apple. This 2-year-old machine runs it at High just fine, as well as my new 2011 iMac with a dual-core 3.06 GHz i3 and ATI graphics chip. (cheapest model iMac, bought in February, 21.5")

You're running 1920 fullscreen, he is running 1920 windowed, it is not at all surprising that your performance is better than his.

I tried it fullscreen at 1920x1080 and 2560x1440 and it is smoother than windowed, but after maybe half an hour of play the graphics issues crop up again: red and white "tablecloth" across the map; some grey squares; and some very strange issues when zooming where it seems to be rendering other random tiles at different zoom levels (e.g. fully zoomed out one tile looks like a low resolution tile with a road in it fully zoomed in).

I do also realise that the 12 cores don't make any real difference but the graphics card and memory really should help smooth things out.

All I'm really saying is that while I didn't buy this machine to play Civ 5 (that would be borderline insanity!) I did sort of expect to be able to play the game at max resolution with everything turned up on huge maps and not have some jerky panning and zooming. Still, better than it was on my early 2008 Macbook Pro :-)

If the problem only develops after some time then it likely doesn't have anything to do with graphics hardware. And also if it only happens on huge maps. Does it go away if you save and exit and then restart the game and reload from your save file? My guess would be that the Mac port isn't making use of all of your physical memory, maybe the way it is ported limits how much memory it can use.

I have no doubt you're right, it's currently using 1.67GB of real memory and 1.37GB of virtual memory according to Activity monitor. It's also running in 32 bit mode so that will limit how much RAM it can use anyway.

I'm a fair way into the game and it's a huge map, started with 16 Civs, obviously stretching everything but after maybe 20 minutes of play I end up with the map looking like below:

If I'm zoomed in it's lovely and smooth but what's the point in a big monitor if you can't play the game with a whole continent visible at one time? :-)

On the plus side, there does seem to be some multithreading going on at some point as the CPU usage was at 300-400% during load.

Sorry if I seem to be overly cynical and bitter, I just find it a little strange that even after all these months these issues haven't been ironed out.

If you had experience with previous Mac ports you'd be pleasantly surprised that it works this well.

It would be nice if Firaxis would develop natively for both Mac and Windows. I wouldn't be surprised if they go there in the future, given the growing popularity and capability of the Mac platform, but who knows?

The new high-end iMac is running the beefiest mobile Radeon there is

Okay, the turn times are SOOO much better with this patch, but I wanted to ask:

Does anyone else feel like the darned game is just plain harder since the patch?

I feel like the AI is keeping up on techs and wonders much, much better. Before the patch, I had a few games where I could dominate the early wonder race on Emperor. Now, I've ratcheted down to King and I'm hard pressed to snag the GL and Oracle before the AI. Then a few turns later somebody puts down Chichen Itza 20 turns before I've got the tech for it.

Maybe something has just shifted and I'm not picking up on it and falling behind somehow. I don't know.

Isn't the game getting harder a good thing since the AI was incompetent?

On the other hand, if it only develops after a while, maybe something's not screwing up till it gets hot.

Regardless, the premise that the game can't run well on new Mac hardware is false. I've got less hardware, and 2 years older than his, and I'm not having this issue, so it's either his hardware, or something's corrupted in his system or drivers or game.

Sure, but my pride's hurtin' here. I mostly just wanted to hear from someone that they'd had the same experience so I don't feel like a total wimp. And of course, the combat AI is still awful.

FWIW, I'm finding this game significantly tougher than Civ IV. Of course, I'm not all that good at it yet since I was waiting for this patch to really start playing. You're certainly right about the combat AI. That was one of the first things I noticed.

Yeah, the AI just can't handle the 1upt. Last night I was playing against Rome as Greece. They already had several legions with ballista and archer support. All I had were my Companion Cavalry running around. A human player with those units would've made mincemeat of me, but I was able to slaughter Rome's forces just by outmaneuvering them and take their two closest cities in only a few turns.

At the same time, though, I am finding it nigh impossible to stay ahead in tech on King, something I could usually pull off on Emperor before.
