Very Important: Patch 1.74

I have seen several people having problems with this new patch. All of us (yes I had a problem too) seemed to have Vista, but I don't know if that's the problem, or just one of many.

My suggestion is DO NOT DOWNLOAD 1.74. What will happen (assuming it doesn't work) is you will be unable to run Civ4 or the uninstaller meaning you'll need to delete the files manually.

Do a search of your computer (with the search program) for Civ4and delete any files that you believe are actually Civ4 files.

Once that's done, your work isn't. Microsoft has made it so computer newbies cannot delete important files. So go to the program 'run' (either on the main start menu or in the acessories folder) and type in regedit.

Then delte the following directories and NOTHING ELSE

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Firaxis Games
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall\{CFBCE791-2D53-4FCE-B3FB-D6E01F4112E8}

You should now be able to install the game again.

DO NOT DOWNLOAD 1.74 AGAIN!

Does that mean install the game again plus the patch 1.74? Or do we just have to face the sad fact that we just arent going to be able to play multiplayer on civ 4?

When I try to run regedet, It couldn't find it.
Also, I don't have vista, so that isn't it.

Hmmm except that I couldn't get Civ 4 to run on my vista machine AT ALL without running the patch, so i'm glad I didn't let this scare me off!

Ever since I installed 1.74, Civ 4 just wouldn't launch. Is that the problem you're talking about? I've reinstalled twice so far...

Vasudan, you're trying to be overly helpful with all these topics. A far easier fix that actually allows you to use the 1.74 patch is to download it from Microsoft.com. Then save it a a folder. Open said folder and double click DXSETUP. Next time, Vasudan, read the bug fixes.

Did you delete both the registeries in regedit?

when installing v1.74 patch after a June DirectX update I still get error 1706 and a "failed to update" message but then it finishes anyway and says it's complete and the game still works afterwards. Not sure if it will uninstall, it might. I did a system restore point prior.

One other issue with the Civ4 v1.74 patch is that if you want to use Beyond The Sword, the 1.74 patch has to be in place or it will try to put it on automatically and the same Error happens that way too.

Am wondering if the August DirectX works better.

I'm not really chomping at the bit to use BTS or v1.74. Wonder if a new patch will come or if it is just my gear?

Im on HP Pavilion, Athlon 64 X2 (W) 3800+ 2.0 GHz, Microsoft Windows XP with SP2 , GeForce 6150 LE , Realtek ALC 888 chipset,
system less than a year old with latest drivers and June DirectX installed.
