I have never had this happen before and don't recall seeing any threads of it happening to anyone else before.
Ok, so for the past few hours I've been well on my way to winning my first Epic Huge Monarch game ever... I have been way ahead in culture, my top 3 cities have double the culture of the 2nd best country's cities.
Well, I had Isabella (and Lincoln, her vassal) declare war on me about 15 - 20 turns ago... U.N. resolutions to get her to end the war have failed (she said never, heh).
Ok, so the weird part... I'm doing ok fending off Isabella's attacks with my decently sized army of puny riflemen (she brought paratroopers and anti-tank to my land... haha) and out of nowhere I get a message telling me that I have just declared war on my neighbor who has been pleased with me for most of the game (was friendly for a while). I did not attack him, but for some reason it's telling me that I have.

This is not a good thing at all, especially since he has tanks, and the best I have is riflemen... basically, he took my first city (not one of my culture cities) on the first turn of the war. I reverted to the turn before it said I declared war & saved it... if I can somehow avoid this war, well I believe I can win... unless Saladin decides to attack me...

Anyways, I'm kinda bummed that that happened, since this could end up being my first win on Monarch in civ4 since before warlords was released.

So, has anyone had that happen or heard of that happening before?

Perhaps your neighbor hsa become a vassal to Isabella?

That would make the neighbor declare war on him, not the other way around.

If you did not declare war on anyone at all and were only fighting izzy, the only condition that could send you to war that I know of is the AP. If nobody was at war with that neighbor, however, or you never got an AP vote choice to dow him, then this has a high likelihood of being a bug of some kind.

Do you have the most recent patch? I remember having defensive pacts with nations in the past, and then declaring war on a civ in between turns, only to find out that the game was bugged to hell -----> I was honoring no defensive pact, since I was the only player at war other than my "target"! That was in warlords too, so no AP interference possible.

Ah forgot to mention that stuff.
Yeah, I checked, he did NOT become a vassal of Izzy, and Lincoln did not switch and become a vassal of his. He was much too powerful to become a vassal of another country or for Izzy to become his vassal.

Also, I had no defensive pacts with anyone, even at friendly Fredrick & Suryavarman wouldn't sign one with me.

I believe either myself or Fredrick were in control of the AP, and there was no vote to attack Suryavarman, since both Suryavarman & Fredrick both share my religion. And if that had been the case, I probably wouldn't have minded the war since Fredrick would have been tearing Suryavarman a new one.

And yeah, my game is fully patched up.

The only thing I can think of at this point is that it was a bug. I haven't attempted to play through again yet to see if it happens again since I made this thread shortly before I fell asleep and I just woke up a little bit ago.

i think there is a spy event wich make sense like a kind of "cassus belli" where one of ur spy has been caught inside our borders bla bla bla wich can end by a DoW from a side.

I just can't remember in this case wich side is considering DoW

check your event log imo, it could be something like that

hmm
I didn't think that a player discovering an enemy spy would cause war without the player declaring on their own.
Also, I had no spies in their country... though that would result in them declaring war on me anyways, but I believe only if our relations were poor, which of course they weren't.

You say you went back and saved at the turn before this strange war declaration occurred; please post the save as being able to look at it ourselves would be extremely helpful. I don't think the event quiddity mentions actually requires you to have a spy unit in his territory though, so I wouldn't rule it out.

From http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?t=236727
Event162
Spy Discovered
Prereq: INDUSTRIALISM and contact with another player AND at least 4 cities AND Capital
Obsolete: ROBOTICS
Active/Weight: 60/100
Result:
1.gain 400 Espionage points AND mutual +2 Attitude modifier with other player
2.pay gold (300 base) AND gain 1 Great Spy unit
3.declare war on other player AND gain free unit support for 20 units AND +1 happy face for 30 turns AND 1 Tank unit for every 4 cities

The description here just says declare war on player. Did the new enemy get these tanks? Did you get tanks?

Just throwing information out there ;)

Well, I went back and checked to see if it would happen again, and it did... I checked the world builder to see if he had any spies in my territory and he does but the spy is still there on the next turn, so he didn't do anything to provoke me in any way.

I was however instead of him being pleased with me like I thought he was, he is actually currently Cautious towards me. But still, I don't think that would have any effect in causing me to declare war on him.

Save is attached.

So I just loaded up the game again, but I changed production in the city that the Khmer spy was in from Rifleman to Security Bureau & rushed production.

This time it did not make me declare war, and the turn after the Bureau was built, the spy was found... still no war.

Very strange...........

Maybe the event text is something like...

"Execute the spy (causes opponent to declare war on you)."

See post http://forums.civfanatics.com/showpost.php?p=5764177&postcount=30

EDIT.. As far as I can tell, it sounds like the trigger for this event depends on your esp ratio with the Khmer - it has nothing to do with yours or his spies in either territory.

If you want to get rid of this event you'll need to undo the addition of Solver's events.

meh, I ended up losing anyways... Suryavarman decided to declare war on me himself about 10 turns later.

I'm curious though. Was this event part of the BUG mod? If so, I would have to question whether it truly is an unaltered gameplay mod if it adds events which weren't in official patches.

The BUG mod does not intentionally add any events. Although if Solver's events aren't included in Official 3.13 and you play BUG with 3.13 it might inadvertently do so; are Solver's events part of 3.13?

Anyhow, thanks for posting the save; I'll poke around and see what I can find.

Edit: Duh, how about I read the first post of the Solver Event topic? They were included in 3.13 so BUG does not add anything new. However the soon-to-be-released version might apply the Partisans change from the 3.17 update so I'll have to look into that.

You can't make a DP during war...

There are only 3 options:

AP voted to start a war (Note: The UN CANNOT vote to start a war)

Accidentally alt-clicked someone, which declares war on them.

Bug

Could you please provide an auto-save? That would help :D

Yep, I'd say it was absolutely the "Spy Discovered" event which Sury got and chose the third option. Note that this *is* the same event that Solver originally called "Discovered Infiltrator"; the names ori uses come from the XML keys and the XML for this one calls itself SPY_DISCOVERED. However ori's description is a little off because option 3 does cause them to declare war on you. For what it's worth the game text for that option says "That is an act of war! Clearly, our people and military contractors will rise to the occasion" and the hover text says "Take the ___ actions as a war declaration upon you."

First, here is Sury's event log (I switched to him using the ChangePlayer functionality included in Better AI). The infiltrator event did trigger with Rome as the second civ as that is definitely the game text for TXT_KEY_EVENTTRIGGER_SPY_DISCOVERED, right down to the misspelling of "discovered" ;)

To verify that he took option 3 of that event we can compare the rewards:

1) Other Civ (in this case Snippa) declares war on Sury. That one obviously happened since it spawned the topic and can also be seen in the event log.

2) Sury gains free unit support for 20 units; check. Here are before and after F2 screens for Sury (from debug mode):

.

3) Sury gains +1 happy face for 30 turns; check. Here are the before & after happiness summary for Sury's capital (from debug mode):

4) Sury gains 1 Tank unit for every 4 cities; he has 15 cities so he should get 3 free Tanks ... check. Here are before and after F9 statistics screens for Sury (from debug mode):

So Snippa got screwed by a random event. Feel free to go into a TMIT-style anti-event rant. ;)

Eh, I don't mind being screwed by an event, at least it was infact an event and not a bug in the game you know?

I don't think I would have actually ended up winning that game anyways even if I could have kept that event from happening and fixed my relationship with that country.

I believe I still had 65 turns left on Cumae to hit legendary status when Willem launched his space ship.

Thanks Dresden for finding that out for me, would have hated to have it happen repeatedly thinking it was a bug.

Ah well, on to the next game... maybe I'll get some better land this time around.

Still wish I could figure out how to build up a large army and keep up with technology on Monarch, seems if I get as far in a game on monarch as I did in that game that there is no way I can win because one of the other countries is getting close to cultural victory or has already started working on their ship while I'm fighting a losing war against a neighbor.

I remember asking info to both Dresden and DanF about this particular event and the likehood of the AI acepting that particular option ( compared with the XML intel ) in the "Is there any logic in the AI DOW?" Thread.......

Still waiting .... :p

Seriously, that and AP-enacted wars are still blurry to me in terms of AI acceptance :( And I think there is some possible mischeif/bugs in there :p
