In my new quest to improve my play, I realized I have:

1. Never won a Cultural Victory
2. Never won a time victory (but who cares right??)
3. Probably won by AP once when TMIT had his series going

Should I be trying out culture and AP more to expand my horizons? I win by Conquest/Dom probably 80% of my games, and the other 20% I go lazy space race. I really only go UN when doing OCC, which judging by posts the last couple of months, apparantly people aren't really playing OCC much anymore.

If I'm wanting to move up to immortal after the new year (and I just moved to emp like 2 weeks ago), would it behoove me to learn these victory conditions? I believe I have a good grasp on slavery, the economy, and warfare, but I still have plenty to learn.

It's just a matter of personal preference. If you would enjoy playing a strategy that minimizes combat but requires a good grasp of diplomacy, then do try the culture. You need to keep from getting attacked by any AI that you can't easily stomp, while bulding up the culture in your cities. It is one of my favorites. I especially like it when I can manage things so that, as a side effect of my culture buildup, my neighbor's city revolts and joins my empire but he stays friendly.

UN is even lazier than space. Just get to #1 pop and manipulate diplo to get everyone to true net +8 (usually needs +9 showing in practice), then gift mass media to someone nobody likes (but doesn't hate too much).

Then you're running against someone who won't get votes, so if you have enough favor you winzor.

If you aren't AP cheesing culture is probably the easiest way to take deity games. 6 cities (only 2 of them good), then get 2-4 religions, get lib/nat + run the slider, bombing artists as needed to even out top 3.

I guess I just always have assumed culture seemed a bit difficult. Even in my best OCC games my city isn't going legendary until 1600-1700, so in my head I"m figurring "how in the world are you supposed to get 2 other cities to legendary as well?"

It always just seems easier to cover up my deficiencies by building a very large military very quickly. Whipping, drafting, whatever it takes. I realize this probably wont' get me to deity, but it seems to work well up through emperor.

What I've done for a diplomatic victory was I took over enough population to get more votes than I needed for a diplomatic victory. I than won a diplomatic victory even though I was at war with the other civs.

I do like the Mastery vc in ROM AND, I havn't successfully achieved that one yet.

If you want culture, then look up T-Hawks site.
There's no guide per se but half his adventures end in culture.

The Sistine Chapel wonder is very useful on cultural victories as well it gives you +2 culture per specialist and +5 per religious building. If your temples and monstries have been founded over 1000 years ago then this bonus is doubled for them just like their normal culture is doubled, so your monastries are then worth 14 and your temples 12 culture.

By stopping research and putting the sliders to culture. The standard culture victory technique is hopelessly artificial.

I have ended up Cultural while pursuing Domination. Defiance of unfavorable AP resolutions forced me to keep my culture slider on 20-30%. Wonders and CreateCon also contributed a lot.
