Viking Revenge (Deity)

take your time, i didn't mean to rush you i just tought you had come to post an update, my mistake. Anyway i hope you are having fun since thats the reason why we play civ is it not? I am moving from demi-gid to diety to see how it goes, although i doubt ill have good results. good luck and have fun.

In the context of the Roman War, it seem sclear to me that we need bulk troops, even over quality of troops to some extent. I know for a fact that Ceasar is sending a SOD of at least a dozen MI towards Cumae, and really an MI is as good as a berserk at taking out an MI. They also defend equally well. Obviously we need to keep building berserks as well though. Eventually I want stacks of them to take on Amsterdam, and grab the Great Library.

Berserks cost 70 shields, making them a little like an overpriced uber-MI. MI cost 40, pikes 30. Before our golden age, the best shield production we were getting was basically 10 spt in a city. Now I have Copenhagen producing 25, for a berserk in 3.

Try as I might, I am unable to optimise many cities, falling one short of optimal shield production after corruption. This is a bit annoying, of course. I have set two cities on pikes, two on MIs, still three making berserks, one a trebuchet, and one on galleys. Only two cities are optimised, though!

Cumae is going to be hard to hold. I suspect that the Romans will throw everything their deity production can produce at our position. If we can hold them off there, we should be able to push ahead with the rest of the conquest fairly quickly.

Our galleys prepare to sail for reinforcements. The Cumae garrison braces for hard times.

IT - As expected, things do not go well. We kill two MI, then lose our three MI protecting our three trebuchets, leading to the loss of these as well. Cumae remains tettering with four defenders plus two trebuchets.

770AD - We injure the lone Roman MI by Cumae, and otherwise just fortify.

IT - Our lone pike dies to a Roman knight - yes they must have chivalry now!

780AD -

Things are going from bad to worse in this campaign. We are facing 2 MI in the SE SOD; an ancient cav, a knight, a legionary and 17 MI in the east SOD;
and the handful of other forces as shown above. You have to know when it is worth it to fight, and when you need to back off. Besides, I would rather fight Rome with knights.

I have decided that we will pursue the tech catch up, then consider going after Rome again. However, we will continue a build up of troops there. Two new pikes are brought across. MI builds are switched to knights. They are much better, with greater manoeuvrability, and the ability to retreat from a losing game.

790AD - We renew peace with Carthage, and sell an ROP for 42 gold. We need this to get to Amsterdam (home of the Great Library).

800AD - Cumae ends its resistance. We drop off more troops there. The Romans have completely pulled out of our territory around Cumae, but have left the troops reinforced just outside the borders.

810AD - Ottomans and Carthage sign a MA against the Netherlands.

820AD - I investigate Amsterdam. It has no less than 9 Swiss Mercs (defense 4), and it is size 9 so they get the city bonus and fortified bonus. How many of these berserks are we going to need to take this city? Originally I was planning on 20, now I am thinking more.

820AD - Netherlands and Carthage sign peace. English complete Shakespeare's Theatre. It is getting way too close to rifles. I have used Bomber Escort's combat calculator to determine that I have about a 46% chance of success with each berserk against the Swiss Mercs fortified in the city of Amsterdam. So 20 berserks is probably about right.

830AD - The Ottomans ask for an alliance against the French. Sorry, mate this is not what we need at the moment, but, yes on the ROP.

840AD - 16 beserks. We are now rated strong vs the Dutch! The problem is being able to commit all our strength against them!

IT - We renew peace with the Dutch. (Yes, we will break this too). It is straight up, however. This may well hurt our ability to trade for techs, but we shall see.

850AD - 17 berserks. Probably about 10 turns untill our attack.

IT - France declares on the Dutch.

860AD - 20 berserks. Now we just need to get them half way around the world.

870AD - 23 beserks. Berserk build now switch to knights. They will be more use ful against Rome, I think.

IT - Rome and France sign a peace treaty. France and Ottomans sign a peace treaty.

890AD - We sign ROP with France.

Nice addition to the story, Sandman. I'm itching to see how this one turns out!

BTW, IMHO it would have been a lot better to just finish off the Romans. I know it's not a big deal, but if they start cranking out MI with that iron by Rome they could be a MAJOR pain in the ass a little later on.

900AD - We renew our Dutch ROP for 20 gold.

910AD - The Dutch request an alliance against the French. Are you joking, mate?

920AD - Our force has assembled at the gathering point just south of Sicily. The force is 14 galleys, 20 beserks, 7 pikes and a settler. There is still quite a sail left.

960AD - I see the a Roman galley occupy sea squares! They must have reached Astronomy! The Golden Age has ended as well.

970AD - Ottomans and Netherlands sign peace.

980AD - Netherlands and France have signed a peace treaty. Joan (France) asks for an alliance against Carthage. No thanks. We renew peace with Rome. I see galleons in the water. We need this great library thingy. Rome has gunpowder now as well. We must be dead last in tech.

1000AD - Rome and Carthage sign an MA against France

1010AD - Our unit support is continuing to kill us. We have no outstanding debts to other civs, and running as low lux as possible, yet are -20gpt. That will probably change in about two turns when we strike Amsterdam. 3 turns left on the peace treaty with the Dutch. The following map shows our almost circumnavigation of the globe in galleys to reach our target of Amsterdam.

and the destination itself,

1020AD - We now also have 26 units in Cumae. It is almost time to take to the sword once again.

IT - Carthage and France sign a peace treaty.

1030AD - The Dutch are still annoyed with us. Well, they are going to be even more annoyed soon. We investigate Amsterdam, just before striking. There are now only 7 Swiss Mercs and a knight defending. The great wonder haul includes the great library, the colossus, the great lighthouse, and the Mausoleum of Mausolos. We have one turn left on our peace treaty, but it was a straight up peace, so we cancel and attack now!

Seige of Amsterdam - First berserk is successful, second fails, third fails, fourth wins - 2 all. Fifth and Sixth win. Next two go 1 all. The next guy fails, but now the knight is the best defender. The knight holds out. The best defender is now a 2 hp Swiss Merc, and the first falls! Then the second, then the knight, and, at last....

We have 9 beserks left in the area around the Hague. We decide to hit this city as well.

Seige of The Hague - We lose the first four berserks straight, but at least there is now an injured Swiss Merc showing. In the end we only kill one Swiss Merc and a knight!

We unload all the pikes and the settler into Amsterdam, and await our technology leap.

IT - The Ottomans cancel our ROP. We pick up theology, printing press, education, banking, democracy, free artistry, economics, astronomy, navigation, gunpowder, chemistry, physics, theory of gravity, magnetism, metallurgy, military tradition (wahoo), we are in the industrial age and we also get nationalism. Unfortunately no steam! This one move has completed the MA for us from the first tier plus invention and chivalry, through to the end.

:hammer: nice one man, although the Seige of The Hague must hurt some.

never done the Great Library jump thing....... kind of want to now

wow! you executed the great lib. trick perfectly. i asume you will now trade techs you gained to other civs in exchange for huge amounts of money, as i did. the only concern will be to hold amsterdam until reinforcments arrive. good luck!

Thanks for the comments, T-Money.

On this point, I only had three defense 2 units left in Cumae at the time facing 17MI. They were certain to be destroyed, taking my beachhead with it. This way I have been able to manage a troop buildup in Cumae, and I now have a good tech advantage over the Romans. Having a go at them with cavalry will be a lot nicer than MI and berserks.

I guess the rng was nice to me on the Amsterdam assault, which is why I had troops left over to contemplate the Hague. What the rng gave me at Amsterdam it took back at the Hague. It was also a little rash, since I didn't know what was there. I could have waited for my injured bereserks to heal, then have a go, also.

It is a bit hard if you build the thing :) Timing the grab for maximum gain, but before rifles, so you can pull it off, is probably the tricky part.

Pretty much right on the money again, El Loco.

I have 7 pikes there (soon to be rifles) so we shall see!

Nice execution indeed.
Thanks GR8MadMax, the support is always appreciated.

1040AD cont - It is time to take stock of the world again. The remaining civs have:
Carthage - 7 cities, up Music Theory, luxes: wines, dyes and gems - only one of each, 68 gold.
Rome - 12 cities, up Music Theory, down chemistry, democracy, economics, luxes: ivory x 3, 10 gold
Netherlands - at war, so no information
France - 11 cities, down banking, astronomy, chemistry, luxes: furs x 3, incense x 4, silks x 3, gold 0.
Ottomans - 4 cities, up music theory, down democracy, economics, physics, metallurgy, luxes: spices x 1, 5 gold
English - 11 cities, up music theory, communism, fascism, luxes: wines, dyes both x1, gold 144.
Scandinavia - 21 cities, even, no luxes, 252 gold making 0 gpt.

It doesn't look like I am going to be able to pick up much gold. I am also kind of surprised that I didn't get music theory, not that the tech is particularly useful to me. I would like a world map, and a supply of luxes. I am pretty sure that there is another landmass that I currently do not know about. Also, it is clear that the English are the civ to worry about. I think my next two targets are obvious though. First Rome to secure land and a native lux - ivory, then France to grab three more native luxes, and continue the attack against a technically ******ed civ. It is great to be able to talk about them this way, especially after being the ones that were technically ******ed ourselves not so very long ago! Then in a real stroke of star gazing (since a lot can happen between then and now, we may line up the Ottomans for an ROP rape. Prior to striking put them into the IA, in the hopes they pick up steam for us, trade, then destroy them before they can upgrade defenses to rifles! We might end up doing this before the French.

Anyway, it doesn't look like we can pick up much cash, but an influx of lux will serve us just as well, I think. The Scandinavian people have been denied simple luxuries for far too long! OK, let us see what we can trade!

From Rome, chemistry would give us music theory, ivory, territory map, 10 gold and 2 gpt.
It doesn't look like we can achieve much useful with Carthage.
From France, chemistry would give us three luxes and the French world map. It doesn't look like they are prepared to pay us gpt though. Obviously our credit is shot with them due to breaking agreements with the Dutch!
From the Ottomans, economics would give us world map, 5 gold and 6 gpt.
It is probably worth doing these trades, and then seeing if we can get anything by trading world maps with England.

We change the deal slightly and run with chemistry to Rome for world map, ivory, 10 gold and 4 gpt. Same deal as above to France. Same deal as above to the Ottmans, but we also get Music Theory. To England, our world map gets Lizzie's territory map and 8 gold.

New world map - as predicted the Dutch have a previously unknown land mass in the area in the north.

A bunch of military builds are swapped to banks and marketplaces. Now that we have some economy, let's maximise it! Cumae starts a barracks to be rushed next turn. The lux slider is zeroed, and most entertainers become productive workers. We have salt peter, and so can build cavalry. We make use of the great lighthouse inspired 5 movement (for the last time). Take one last look at Amsterdam, and then a look at how much more culture the Netherlands have over us, and put the torch to Amsterdam. In addition to the wonders, we lose a courthouse, walls, an aquaduct and a bank - very useful improvements, but tootally worthless if it flips back to the Dutch. We sell the improvements for 62 gold (you can not sell the Aquaduct!), and then abandon the city. We then found Fauske in its place. A much better, Scandinavian sounding name! First build is barracks. We have 7 pikes and 9 berserks fortified in Fauske! Also I have left 6 galleys, in case I want to try to amphibiously assault the Hague again.

GPT is up to 43 per turn, thanks to the luxes. And that ends 1040AD.

the story will get really intresting now. you have the french and romans in control and the dutch to some extent, the only civ that might become a big challenge would be the english. But nothing you can't handle. Keep up the good work!

Well, I have just joined the forum Sandman but I must say, this is the first best story I have read on here! Very good and very exciting too! I look forward to see how your conquests turn out!

Actually, it is not quite time to end 1040AD. We decide to see if we can get anything with one more round of map trading.

World map gets Carthage's territory map and 8 gold.
And nobody else has anymore resources to pay us anything.

The Dutch response is limited to the SOD on the hill of 3 Swiss Mercs and 3 longbows, and the other lone SOD of one of each.

IT - England declares on the Carthaginians. The Dutch find a knight an attack our position in Fauske. We lose two pikes, but kill two longbows. The hill is pillaged, and only a swiss merc and lingbow remain on the hill. The rest of the force is three Swiss Mercs a longbow and a knight in grassland, none fortified.

1050AD - At Fauske, we decide to strike back with the berserks. We lose two berserks, but destroy this SOD in the grassland, leaving one berserk exposed, so we cover him with a pike. The barracks is rushed. The barracks at Cumae is also rushed. The rest of the gold is saved for rushing units next turn.

We don't want England ripping through the Carthaginians too easily, so we sell them horses for 10gpt (all they would offer). Rome has some money now, so we sell our world map for 14 gold and 1 gpt. And we are able to squeeze 5 gold and 3gpt out of the Ottos for our worls map as well.

IT - The Dutch response is pathetic - basically there is no response. A little troop of a swiss merc, an MI and a longbow advance to the border.

1060AD - The Fauske barracks completes, and walls are ordered up. Pikes to rifles cost 150 gold, so we can only upgrade two! We are going to need a lot of upgrades and have limited financial resources. We locate Leos. It is also Dutch owned, in the town of Groningen. So we hatch a plot to grab this city with our remaining berserks.

IT - The three Dutch units advance into our borders.

1070AD - We kill the three Dutch units without loss. We upgrade one galley to a galleon for 60 gold.

IT - The English offer an MPP, if we cough up 3gpt. Nope. The Carthaginians complete Newtons University.

1080AD - The Dutch bring up another two longbows and a Swiss Merc.

1090AD - Instead of destroying the attackers, we upgrade one more pike, and send all nine berserks and a rifle off to the target Groningen.

IT - Fauske survives without loss, killing a longbow. The Dutch drop off two more longbows and another Swiss Merc.

1110AD - The Dutch drop off a knight by Fauske, and manage to kill a rifle leaving one. Our assault force is also one turn form striking Groningen.

IT - Rome and Carthage sign a MA against England. We kill the knight and a longbow, promoting our rifle in Fauske.

1120AD - Seige of Groningen - Our berserks shine. We go 5-2, and

Smith's is a nice bonus! We need to somehow try and keep this city! There are 6 resistors. For the first turn we will put everybody we can spare in their for resistance quelling. Gpt jumps from 82 (due to banks completing) to 119 as a result of Smiths. The Dutch will talk to us, but we can not get cities, and they will only offer 14 gpt plus 6 gold for peace. Not enough guys (besides Groningen might flip, and force us to retake it.) Now the question is, do we bring in the Ottomans to help crush the Dutch on this landmass, but thereby locking us in for 20 turns, or just carry on ourselves, and see what the Dutch can through at us? For the moment I choose the latter. We empty all our units into Groningen for maximum unit suppression on the first turn. We also upgrade two rifles at Fauske.

At Cumae we upgrade three knights with our remaining cash.

IT - The Dutch pillage by Fauske and land a knight and a swiss merc by Groningen.

1130AD - We upgrade 8 knights at Cumae. By Groningen, we mop up the swiss merc, but only retreat the knight, so have to expose two berserks. No losses, though.

IT - The Dutch find some cavalry, and attack Fauske. They go one for one against our rifles. A longbow kills one berserk.

1140AD - I decide to take the peace deal with Willem. We also get 10 gold and 20gpt. We finish uograding our 13 knights to cavalry in Cumae, and our six trebuchets to cannons.

Welcome aboard Ksim.

Your first one inspired me to have a go at writing on here in the first place, Steviejay!

IT - The resistance in Groningen ends.

1150AD - Our force in Cumae is:
13 cavalry
6 cannons
3 berserks
6 MI
18 pikemen
1 settler

A little pike heavy! Not really enough cavalry - I would have liked about 30, then we would just rip through the Romans, however, they are at war with England and France, so pre-occupied, and also only one tech from military tradition. I want to strike before they get there, so I guess we have to go now. Ceasar is giving us ivory and 5gpt at the moment. With a bit of luck, we will have our own source of ivory soon (his!)

We demand 45 gold (all he has), Ceasar says to take our empty threats elsewhere. We declare - not so empty this threat, Julius! We launch a cavalry assault on Veii, guarded by muskets. We lose three cavs in the assault, and also two are retreated, but inevitably, Veii falls. This reveals 16 units (mainly MI) of Romes that are sitting in a fortified mode by Veii. 5 inside Veii's borders, the rest just outside. These units are out of range of move one units, but coincidentally, we have five cavs left to move!

We also capture three trebuchets (they were ours from previously, anyway)! These take single hit points off three MI in the close stack to Veii. Our remaining cav then kill four MI, with one retreat, no losses. We try and protect the hill, by advancing two healthy cavalries onto it and fortifying, but this reveals more Roman troops- another 5 MI and a pike. We advance all the cannons, the MI and berserks into Veii. Wounded cavs retreat back to the barracks in Cumae. A bunch of pikes join their mates in Veii.

IT - It takes 3 MI and a knight to die before killing our two cavs. I am not sure if it was worth it, except that it meant that the bulk of the Roman troops now surround Veii in exposed terrain! We forgot to manage happiness due to the loss of ivory, and a bunch of cities riot.

1160AD - Veii is surrounded by:
2 knights
1 ancient cavalry
10 MI
1 legionary
1 pike

None of which is fortified. There are another 10 MI in the vacinity of Veii as well. I believe a decisive battle here will open the way to roll over Rome! Two more pikes are upgraded to rifles in Cumae. Veii is abandoned and Karistad built in its place. No point having to deal with 9 resistors.

We bombard the largest SOD of 12 units. The three attack 3 units are reduced to 2 hps. A berserk kills the ancient cav. We then kill 8 more MI for the loss of one MI, but at this point run out of available attacks.

it - Netherlands and England join in against Rome.

1170AD - We kill the knight, and regain the hill, killing an MI. A cav kills another MI. To be continued.
