Okay, I'm new to Civ 7 but I've played all the others. I'm in a battle with a Village that was hostile to me and this village keeps spawning units....10 or more at a time. I cannot find a solution to ending this fight so I'm here looking for help understanding these dynamics. Thank you

Hello. Usually this happens when someone use insite raid action against you om this independent power. Maybe more than one civilization tries to do so against you. Normally independent powers don't spawn many units.

Stealth is right, I just wanted to say you're not alone. I've been playing deity since launch and I have abandoned games due to someone using incite raid on a nearby Independent Power.

I hope it doesn't turn you off the game, it's just some bad luck. If I were you I'd start a new game or replay your current seeds with knowledge that it's coming.

Did you have much of a military? In 7, opponents always know your military strength and are likely to take aggressive actions (sanctions, incite raid, war) if you don't have a standing army. I build my first military unit after a scout or two depending on how safe I'm feeling. Sometimes I'll go three scouts before my first military unit but that's dicey. In my current game I was feeling very safe, pushed it, and nearly ate it as a result.

There's also a policy in the early civic tree that gives +3 Combat Strength against IPs.

You can destroy the village. Just place a unit on the hostile village tile and use the action button to destroy the village.

First, welcome to CFC! :band:

More to the point, yes, there are several reasons why a particular village (independent power, or IP) might be spawning a bunch of units.
  • If it's early in the age, you may have settled to close to them.
  • If it's midway through an age, you may have an AI opponent who is using the "Incite Raid" action on the IP, against you. I play at Sovreign difficulty, so I have not seen this very much
  • If it's near the end of the age, one of the crises that can come up is a barbarian uprising, where new villages / IPs pop up, all angry as hornets. I've seen them have army commanders that are crazy promoted, though not always packed with units.
The advice above is all good stuff. DO build a few military units in your first few builds in Antiquity. DO scout around before plopping down a settlement. I tend to go towards discipline early on, so that I can send my first army commander, a couple slingers, and a couple warriors off on an adventrure to clear a hostile IP and get some experience. In Civ7, the experience goes to the *commander*, not to the individual units like it did in Civ3 thru Civ6.

It would be useful to know if you're in the beginning of the age or at the end during an Invasion Crisis.

In the beginning of the age, I take a different approach than some of the posters here - I very rarely (almost never) train military units early on as it's very uncommon to experience heavy raids in the beginning.
Instead, I only train Scouts - how many of them depends entirely on when I can build a Granary so that the Granary finishes on the same turn as when (or the turn after) the City grows to size 4. Then I start building Settlers.

I typically always choose Gold from the Goody Huts if available, and keep around 200 in the bank in case I have to buy military units to defend myself. In case I spot an incoming raid, I first buy a Slinger to sit in the City and sling rocks at any intruder (perhaps also a Warrior if I can afford it), and if it's a considerable raid and I'm out of money, I start training a unit in the Capital.

One fortified Warrior defending next to the City Center, with a Slinger inside the City, can really do some damage!

I'm not sure whether this is good advice for a beginner or not, just thought I'd chip in with a different point of view. I always play on Deity or higher difficulty.

That's interesting. I do take gold sometimes, but if the option is 50 gold or 50 culture/science I go with the research. I understand that gold is more valuable early, but I can't shake the feeling of missing out when I generally value culture or science at two or more times as valuable as gold.

Yes, at times it can be very hard to choose, sometimes I spend a minute or more contemplating what to pick :crazyeye:

But in general I always pick Gold (unless I have a healthy bank balance and/or good GPT) for this specific purpose, i.e. not "wasting" Production on Military.
