Violence towards the innocent -- why?

Why not? Maybe they want to make a point and take those with them that they feel who are responsible of their life being so bad, sometimes their targeting is more precise and sometimes it's just toward society in general.
Random suicide bombers or shootings are pointless. Now a man kills his cheating wife, then shoots himself? Okay, I get that. I don't condone killing randoms.

Why not? When people do suicide hardly anyone notices or changes their behaviour towards those that are left alone etc. It's like these people are expected to have still common courtesy not to take anyone with them if they decide to exit.
Not really. The people who cared but didn't give attention or help spend the rest of their life with the guilt of a suicide on their conscience. That's a pretty slick way to kill 2 birds with 1 stone. The rest of society may not notice, but they also aren't to blame. Again, it keeps innocents out of it.

It should be also noted that if we left out those few that make murders, there are numerous that do suicides and even more those that make slow suicides through alcoholism etc. and most of these people are just forgotten.
I would agree with sole suicide than mass murders, that's the point. One targets those immediately involved, the other those who were in the wrong place at the wrong time.

"So there"

@Masquerouge: Let's assume that the teenager is egoistic, does not believe in life after death and likes violence. If he is going to kill himself, as horrible as it is, it is actually rational to kill other people at the same time. And in the whole world there must be numerous people who are egoistic and atheist and like violence.

To me, the simple fact that you want to kill random people is proof of your insanity.
As you said, a lot of people are egoistic, atheist and attracted to violence, yet very few actually go out on a rampage, presumably because they're still sane.

Now targeted terrorism is compltely different but I don't think that's what your asking about.
I'm talking any form of random killings. This includes terror -- though that's more obviously religious fanaticism.

How selfish or brainwashed have people become these days that they feel the need to shoot-up innocents at schools, blow up public venues, or attack random people -- when ultimately they end up dead themselves? What ever happened to suicide?

Anyone explain to me why people have lost all sense of reason and feel the need to take others down with them? I guess I see the religious motiviation to some extent -- but let's face it, no religion endorses murder -- even if it's to rival religions. School kids shooting up peers? Why? Not enough attention?

Do you think this trend will continue? Will the world just continue to crack down on this sort of thing, or is that even possible? How do we combat this when it's usually by surprise, not to mention the end result is death of the attacker, thus no pattern available to foreshadow their final attack?

This has always happened. Just back then it was in the form of raiding monasteries and slaughtering city inhabitants, burning farms and whatnot. If you ask me, we're probably doing a lot better in that regard than we used to. It's still unnacceptable and inexcusable, but it's by no means a new phenomenon, and certainly not related to "violence in video games" or whatever.

It's called mental illness, and unless you want to live in a world like "Gattaca" it's going to continue forever.

Genetic engineering would be useful to get rid of insanity and mental problems.

Nah, something like "Brave New World" is better. They can stop riots with music and euphoric drugs.

It seems these people have an intense need for recognition & attention. If they can't get other people's attention by healthy means then by God they're going to get it one way or another (even if they die in the process, most have grandiose ideas of revenge & remembrance by others after death).

Also, to a bitter, resentful, jealous person there are no innocent. Even a happy kitten can send them into a wave of anger at the creatures apparently blissful, easy life (and lack of heartache, pain, abuse, etc. that the perpetrator feels him/herself the victim of).

This is nothing new. It's just that modern law enforcement and media methods allow us to know about it more often when it happens.

Possibly there is no "why". There may be no explanation other than a brain malfunction.

it happens. we just have to try to avoid it as best we can, but when it does, well, what can we do to the past? people will always be people. they will always have these bursts of emotions they can('t) control.

because it's their turn to f#ck up the world before they die.
