Voice Lines for New Civs

Now that 1.18 is out, I wanted to revive an old idea to hire some voice actors on Fiverr to give us voice lines for the new civs. I was planning on giving Colombia a go so I will start with that as a trial case. The two main topics for this thread:

1. Is anyone familiar with how to chop up the lines in the audio file and implement them into the game? Should I be aware of anything specific before I make the audio request?

2. Language choices. Here are the new civs:

Harappa - We don't really know, I think default Sumerian is a good choice
Assyria - Babylon's Akkadian works here
Nubia - No idea what to go with for this one, following the convention of Egypt, perhaps Sudanese Arabic?
Hittites - Also not sure about this one, Byzantine Greek?
Polynesia - There's a number of Polynesian languages. I can't remember which island we're using as the spawn location, but presumably that is the best choice.
Dravidians - I think Tamil is the best choice
Toltecs - Aztec's Nahuatl works
Kushans - I think modern Dari is probably the best choice here
Malays - Malay
Turks - Modern Turkmen?
Tibet - Tibetan
Moors - Moroccan Arabic
Java - Javanese
Spain - I've never been happy with the default Spanish in the game. For one, it is certainly more Latin American than European, but it is done in such a neutral way it doesn't really fit Mexico, Colombia or Argentina. I would like to get a Castilian Spanish VA for Spain, speaking of which...
Colombia - Colombian Spanish
Argentina - Argentine Spanish
Mexico - Mexican Spanish
Burma - Burmese
Rus - Ukrainian? The Rus spoke an old eastern slavic language which evolved into Ukrainian, but also Russian and Belorussian. I think given the core in Kyiv, and the civ convention of modern languages, Ukrainian is the best choice.
Vietnam - Vietnamese
Swahilis - Swahili (Ideally from Zanzibar)
Poland - This one already exists, but we can get higher quality audio now.
Italy - Same as Poland above.
Mughals - From my very limited understanding, Mughal royals spoke an old Persian while subjects largely spoke languages from the Indian subcontinent. I figure Urdu is a good blend of both and largely evolved out of the intermixing of Persian and North-Western Indian languages.
Thailand - Thai
Sweden - Swedish
Congo - Kikongo is still spoken today in Angola, but I don't think I will be able to find any VA for this. Kimbundu, Lingala, Kituba, and Tshiluba are other Western Congolese languages which we may have more luck with, hopefully not too much of a stretch.
Brazil - Brazilian Portuguese
Canada - Canadian English

Thoughts?

I have gone ahead and used AI to script lines based on the originals in English and the overall tone. If anyone wants to try some of these out themselves:

I love what you're up to, but there's some sloppy bits and I think there's a few things that need to be addressed.
  • Kushans: This is debatable. They spoke Bactrian but that's extinct as of now. Dari, as you suggested, is a Western Iranian language, like Persian. The Kushans are based in the east, and what I instead suggest is Pashto. That's the closest major living relative to Bactrian. It should sound much closer to what they spoke back then.
  • Turks: Turkmen or Uzbek are suitable choices, not Turkish or anything based in that area.
  • Harappa: I get the idea you're going for, but Sumerian's an isolate language from Mesopotamia and it sounds nothing like people in the Indus would speak. It's more believed that Harappans spoke a proto-Dravidian language. We can retcon the use of Tamil of the Dravidian civ here.
  • Nubia: Arabic erases the identity of the Nubians. There's actually a language spoken by around 685,000 in the world today called Nobiin, which is the best descendant of Nubian. This, though, might be a very niche field for a voice actor. Sudanese Arabic is a fallback just in case, but it's not going to be immersive.
  • Hittites: This is really tricky. We could re-use Persian, maybe Babylonian, maybe Sumerian. But Greek seems really out of touch with the kind of culture Hittites were.
  • Kongo: Don't write off Kikongo! It's worth a shot. Kituba is a suitable choice too, but Lingala is definitely the fallback if we don't find anybody.
  • Polynesia: Aho'eitu is the sole leader of this civ, and he's first king of the Tuʻi Tonga. As such, Tongan is the only logical choice, really.

I would imagine for languages in which anyone available, voice actor or otherwise, is able to translate the lines that would be better than going straight to ai or google translate. A lot of the time such translations end up sounding unnatural or even outright wrong

Chopping up the lines in the audio file is pretty trivial and anyone can do it with some 2 minute youtube tutorial and audacity. Can't speak to putting them in the game, I suppose that would be a Leoreth thing! :P

In theory, is it possible to steal voice lines from Civ 5, 6, and 7? I know we don't like to acknowledge the hex tile games here, but quite a few of these civs exist in those games already.

In theory yes, as long as there is a voice response for every type of command. Perhaps the audio file type needs to be converted.

Exactly the kind of feedback I was hoping for! I will go ahead with all of your suggestions.

In theory, is it possible to steal voice lines from Civ 5, 6, and 7? I know we don't like to acknowledge the hex tile games here, but quite a few of these civs exist in those games already.
What hex tile games? Civ 4 is only 20 years old.
Do you know which civs? It might be useful to hold off on paying for most of those. In the event that there's a way to just pull from those games.

I don't disagree. The scripts are more about having a reference point for the voice actor, but I intend to delegate to them to modify things as they see fit.

Speaking of voice actors, I have gone ahead and made the order for Colombian. If anyone else is interested in pitching in on a couple of these, the cheapest VAs cost around $5 USD, but Fiverr eats a $3 service fee, so expect to pay about $8 per civ. In addition to the scripts, I am also sending this playlist as a reference point:

Once I get the audio, I will upload it here.

I'm assuming all these games have voice lines for units. Why wouldn't they? I don't know. Why did they changes to hexes and one unit per tile? Madness and stupidity. So it's possible they don't have voice lines for units. I played 5 for maybe 50 hours, like fifteen years ago at this point. Never touched 6 or 7 so I could be completely wrong.

Civ 5 has:
Spain (Castilan lines?)
Siam/Thailand
Polynesia
Denmark (not on the list, but possibly of interest for the 1700 or potential 1500 and 1900 AD scenarios)

Civ 6 has:
Brazil (if we want something distinct from European Portuguese)
Colombia (Gran Colombia)
Indonesian (I once asked how different Indonesian was from Malayan and it started a flame war)
Kongo
Nubia
Poland
Vietnam

Civ 7 has:
Assyria
Mexico
Chola (Tamil dynasty)
Qajar (Farsi, for Iran)

Civ V does not have unit lines, units just make sounds on selection that maybe relate to what the unit is (still have no idea what the worker select sound is supposed to be to this day
). I don't think 6 and 7 do either, but haven't really played them. Instead, the leaders get voiced lines. Adapting those into unit lines is a stretch, but possible. Some of the lines are fairly generic, but those are the minority.

I know I am predisposed to hate on Civ5 and everything but why would you remove such an effective way to immerse yourself in the civilization you are playing. I guess you get that from receiving +1 science from building a city district that is adjacent to two deserts.

Just when I thought the hex tile games couldn't get worse, they did.

Stupidity and madness. I am not enjoying being right.

I've got the audio file for Colombia. I think this worked out very well, planning on getting Vietnamese next.

If anyone is interested in doing the same, here's the script I used:
Spoiler Script :

I am hoping to get some voice lines for a video game mod project for Civilization IV. We've added Colombia as a playable faction in the game and wanted to have voice selection lines for units in an authentic Colombian accent. If you want a reference point, there is a playlist of the lines that came with the game here:
There's a bit of variance between different civilizations, but you can hear that the tone is generally military in nature, we're hoping to get that instead of a clear professional tone. I pulled the English script and fed it into an AI translator to come up with a Colombian Spanish version, but I have no idea how accurate it is. You can find the script below, but feel free to tweak lines to make things sound more natural as you see fit. Finally, please leave distinct pauses between each line since they will need to spliced into individual audio files for the game.

If you're going to put an order in, I suggest stating your intention to do so in this thread first to prevent overlap.
