Welcome to the collaborative development thread for Voices in the Dark, my long-discussed space colonization IOT, now recruiting you to help design it!

For those who haven't heard me ramble about it in recent weeks, here's the rundown:

Voices in the Dark is going to be the story of humanity's first interstellar colony, and the game itself will follow the struggle of the initial men and women who land there. The game itself will be set up with players taking on the roles of characters in one or two initial settlements, and will primarily focus on their struggle to adapt and survive, throwing out traditional points-based economies in favor of a resources-and-technology driven system instead.

However, before all of that, we need to learn the story of how these far-flung explorers got there. That is where this thread - and you, reading it - come in.

In this thread, those who wish to contribute will be helping flesh out the motives and designs of this venture, ranging from the motives for the expedition to the technologies and composition of the colonists themselves. Lest you think these decisions are mere RP, each of the major decisions will have a significant impact upon the state of the expedition when you arrive in your new home - for example, a band of refugees from an Earth that's suffered an alien conquest is going to be equipped and trained extremely differently than a band of scientists dispatched from a Solar-System spanning utopia.

Please note that this thread does not mean this game is coming in the near-future. This is a long term project, and the thread is here to help build the situation that will occur once the game is actually prepped to go - I will be running other games in the interim. As such, I don't expect contributors to post on a regular schedule, or necessarily have interest in every component - so feel free to get involved; there's no penalty for wanting to post on some issues but not others. In the meantime, enjoy this part as it is itself.

In general, this thread will be collaborative amongst the players, but please keep in mind a few things:

-1) This is painted in mostly broad strokes. Specific details aren't necessarily undesirable, but please refrain from speculating too much about future politics or technologies unless they're the topic at hand.
-2) While I prefer to run this by general consensus for many reasons, I will reserve the right to step in to ward off certain clichés or patently ridiculous events (the earth is not falling to space ponies, no matter how amusing/horrifying that may be for you).
-3) Please keep this civil, and refrain from attacking other players on any basis. Remember, disagreement is different than attacking. Discussion is different from debate.

Right. So. All of that aside, first topic is the state of Earth: are we continuing with a world that looks somewhat as it does now? Has Earth fallen to alien invasions? Does humanity now span the Solar System, or are we living on a dying world? Any and all suggestions and discussion on this subject is now open, and you may now post.

Bsiclly, Earth will be divided up into numerous major world powers, such as:

    USA
    Russia
    EU
Commonwealth (Perhaps part of the US block)
    China
    Japan
    India
    Brazil

These countries all have their own space programs and are funding seperate space colonization programs for their own personal benefit. Tensions would be high in colonies, and a chance of an interplanetary war is possible.

    I vote Annihilation.

For whatever reason, shortly after the launch of the colony ship, Earth has gone dark. Maybe the capabilities of the communication systems were overestimated, maybe there was a final World War, maybe aliens killed everyone. Regardless, Earth is not important.

This ratchets up the tension by forcing the colony to make for itself, to rebuild humanity on its own using the resources it can scavenge from the ships or mine from the star system itself or collect from surviving vessels of Earth.

Previously, Earth was a Multipolar Star System.

Nations possessed their own spaceflight programs, and different ones rushed to different planets in the solar system. Eventually, these colonies grew to become fairly densely populated while nations worked out the mechanics of spaceflight.

I vote Brave New World. Private enterprise in much of the developing has changed the realm of space exploration as being the providence of nationstates, and instead being within the realm of agencies, corporations, well-connected cults, and any eccentric billionaire.

Earth itself has become a post-cyberpunk mirror of its former self. Technology has allowed non-state actors such as NGOs and multinationals to assume even larger power in all aspects of life, including political life.

I agree with Nuke, this seems like the best idea IMO.

I like Nuke's idea of a Multipolar Star System, but I'm hesitant about the Annihilation scenario. I think ties to the old world would add something more interesting then the Earth just falling off the grid.

I vote Earth fell to a zombie apocalypse a few centuries after present day.

No, seriously. The various surviving nations threw everything they possibly could at battling the zombies while going for a last-ditch space colonization game. They'd already set up a colony on Mars, after all. Of course, that was the trouble in the first place: the new environment did some weird things to fungi and germs. No one truly knows how it happened, but a zombie "virus" developed on Mars and made its way back to Earth. Those lucky enough to be immune were launched into the dark void. Earth is presumed lost, but no one can be sure. No one wants to be sure. It's in the past now.

    I vote Assimilation

As the primal colonial fleet was forth a invasion force of some sort arrived at Earth a few months later; the war took 2 months before Earth was officially annexed. Rumour has it that the humans are being assimilated into the space empire that has engulfed them. Another xeno power managed to cause a intergalactic diversion to give the colonial ship time to evade.

The world was UN influenced Multi-polar System: nations had their own space programs but among the colony fleet was a colony ship that was a joint project by many nations under the UN banner to divert costs. Hence the colony ship status is Alpha Centauri as divisions of ideology are echoing in the background to emerge.

Rumour has it that the aliens are to set out a (in trail) assimilated human military force, backed by their xeno technology, towards the zone where the colonists went so that the aliens may plan to bring these colonies under the xeno empire, while other aliens powers in a Multipolar Galaxy strive their own visions for these human refugees.

I'm posting an idea that I had in chat amalgamated with a few other ideas. I'm calling it Space Puritans, it isn't just that but I like the name.

The key concepts are that Earth hasn't been blown up or annihilated or anything. The colony is a series of colonies on one planet, due to the distance between Earth and the inhabitable planet (a couple of months with FTL) the main people who want to go there are people who don't agree with what's happening back home, hence the title of this idea. The ideologies that the colonists follow would be left to the individual players. There might be some sort of intermediary "government" that "rules" over all the colonies, but their power should be very limited. The powers that be shouldn't give a rat's arse about what goes on in the colonies as long as the taxes are paid in full.

FTL communication doesn't exist the only way to communicate between home and the colony is via Courier Ships. This is just a cool addition that someone on the chat came up with, I don't take credit for it.

    Thoughts? Comments?

Note while I will aim for the idea of a Multipolar Galaxy in terms of xenos I will focus on the colony ship...

Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri Inspired Divisions

The humans colonists are to be divided on planet fall by ideology with competing visions for the new world. What visions will these be?

    -more will be added later-

You realise you will be playing individual characters in a single colony, and that other players will probably help construct this once we understand the world that gave rise to the ideologies in the first place, right? Like, transhumanism won't be popular without the technology for it, for example.

Sone was concerned about the initial seeding for my idea. I can't think of anything other than Space Australia (a.k.a Convicts) but probably someone else could come up with something better.

    I like NC's idea.

Who said I was predefining the ideologies? I sense that certain players could find and lead ideological movements. These ideologies could be emerged during planet-fall; theocracy, authoritarianism, ecopolitics, socialism... many foods for a great banquet. A single colony can have many divisions; tensions could be presence and the removal of the peace keeper could spill into civil divisions at greater level.

    Also: ideologies=transhumanism?

I don't think that CivO would run a setting like that, but I would gladly join if anyone were to GM it.

Well the idea is that the convicts are the "first wave" that go to the planet to mine the precious minerals/be convicts. Then the "second wave" comes full of people who are at odds with the status quo but have enough influence to mount an expedition to the colonies.
