VQ Series Discussion thread

I checked back to my earlier saves, and I think that was only during your one turn. Every time on my turns KK had a small treasury.
O.K. That might be. So it has been my :smoke:.
Next time I know better!

No, I wouldn't consider it :smoke: ... you had no idea what the situation with KK's treasury is/was/will be. You had the right idea at the time (trade with KK) but for the wrong reason ... which is a lot better than having the wrong idea.

Interesting debate. I didn't realize you could have two DP's and not receive a negative. That's something new. In any game I have played it's always caused a negative but that was for a civ at the other end of the world.

For want of a nail, the shoe was lost...? I like that Chris....

Just a simple trade probably would have made a difference. But in Emperor we are so fixated on getting gpt for our trades it's easy to overlook the other advantage of trading. Team B might pull it off but the power is an issue and in Greyfox's turn he is hoping to change that. Again an iffy proposition but huge payoff if it works.

Dot I like the sound of the game (like Freddy) but huge....my computer is limited right now although all I need is a new video card.

I just realized why Team A didn't go to war.

They are Canadians and well we are a bunch of Pacifist. If we were invaded we would be screwed and pretty much rely on the US to keep us safe. Good thing our PM is liked by Bush. Although the meeting between the two seemed kind of like a dumb and dumber episode.

Should have named your cities German or French at least they are warmongers.

Who said that pacifists can't fight?

It's about not starting a war ... at least to me. If in the need to defend ... well: "We're one and you know it's true so don't f%ck with us or we f%ck with you." :nya:

Well Canada isn't really that pacifist anyways since according to our statistics Canadians are well armed. Our army has suffered but once was pretty good especially during WWII (we had 300 naval ships back then now we might have 10)

During WWII Canada did have to defend itself as U-boats did show up in Hudson Bay.

U-Boote? (Subs?)

;) Whose subs have they been anyway? I didn't know that. The questions is not meant ironically.

Apparently they were lost and "whose subs" you silly. That's a rhetorical question nicht wahr meine deutsches freund? Sie waren naturlich Deutschlanders.

Good luck on your move and new job by the way. See you in September if North Korea doesn't blow us up. (good oldie song too "see you in September")

I'm going to be OOP when they start doing the registration to SGOTM 2. I would like to play in this one so if you guys decide on making a team, I would like to play on your team.

Just an idea for another VQ game anybody interested?
The variants are open for discussion of course.

Shall we try doing another team comparison.

Personally I like epic as I find on normal the game does really move along. If people would prefer normal it doesn't matter to me. Would be more of a challenge.

Civilization: American, Leader: George Washington, Organized, financial or just randomize this and see who we draw. (Egypt sure shows up alot)

I don't know how people feel chosing a civ but being a second try on Emporer for me I would like to choose good ole Washington. Any game he's been in (SP) always ends up being a thorn in my side.

Map: Fractal
Water level: Medium
Starting period: Ancient
Speed: Epic or Normal
Barbs: Raging (to make up for choosing own civ)
Victory conditions: all enabled, NO PA and a special flavor of variants:

1. "We must win by space victory so we need to be "schmart" tech wise"

2. We are scientist/star trek geeks and don't want no freakin religion.
So no religious civics. Now this might be too tough so how about this:
OR
2. We are "christian scientist" and no other religions.
OR
2. We can use religious civics but as soon as "free religion" becomes available we have to change to it.

3. We don't care much for monarchs either so we have to change to Representation/Universal Suffrage as soon as it's available.

4. We are capitalist and love the pursuit of money, and will sell our grandmothers for a buck. We must have a city that is producing at least 100gpt by 1500 ad. (and trade like yankee traders)

5. Being the incredible scientists we are, we will need to accomplish something similiar in the art of science. My thought is 300 beakers for one city by 1500ad.

6. Culture schmulture, we are scientists and spend our time in the labs blowing up stuff. So all scientific buildings have priorty.

Just some ideas as I like some kind of added variants for spiceness, rather than "just win". Personally I would like to beat emporer without PA as it does turn in your favor quite substantially. Lots of cottages and maybe some nice resources like gold/silver/gems if we are lucky. And even better a coastal area with five sea resources. (Why does Ghandi always get those??)

How about this name for the variant:

VQ08 - One step for man, One giant step for mankind.
OR
VQ08 - Houston, The Eagle has landed.
OR
VQ08 - Mission Control
OR
VQ08 - Kennedy Space Center

Throwing out some names here:

NamliaM
Eektor
Armstrong
Greyfox (I know he OOP until July 23rd but still love to have him good ole blood and guts)

Anybody from the A team.....
and try the team comparison again and being a science game I think it will be tougher for the war mongers.

Just let me know your thoughts. Getting 10 players for two sessions would be good. I am able to start this up fairly soon have lot's of time off.

Now I hear there is another SGOTM2 coming up I am also very interested in that.

I wouldn't mind playing another one of these if enough people are interested. But of course Team A still hasn't finished 06...

I'd also be interested in taking part in this, although I guess the VQ roster may have become too large now for a single team. Somehow I think that the idea of Team A/B VQ in the SGOTM might be too much of a good thing! :crazyeye:

I went looking for more info on SGOTM but couldn't find anything. Eektor you mentioned it, where did you hear that it was starting soon. SGOTM01 isn't finishing until Aug. 8th, 2006. Would the 2nd one start before that?

Alanh from Maintenance Thread said:
However, if this deadline [August 8] stands we'll open sign-ups in the last week of July for a SGOTM 2 start early in August.

From the maintenance thread in the SGOTM forum.

Edit: Having two teams for the SGOTM 2 isn't a bad thing. I think the reason we have this VQ thing going, is that all of us enjoy the quick pace we play in our games and at least in the last SGOTM we are very active in our posting.

I suspect one or two more from Team A might be interested, so we could get started with this real soon.

I am fine with just one team just to prove we don't need no freaking civ to help us. Greyfox what do you think about having variants. You did mention you liked the space victory idea so maybe a few variants? How about in a few days post the start spot which I would be happy to do. We can always discuss the variants but I like adding a little spice myself.

I'd be interested. I like Epic (since we'll be almost certainly warmongering :)), as for leader, I enjoy Washington, but I wouldn't mind a "random" leader as long as it's a relatively "strong" one. :)

As for the variants, some seem like they might make this tough.

1. Spaceship - sounds good :)
2. This seems tough... but then again, we can still adopt religions... hmm.
3. We'd probably run one of these pretty soon along anyways, unless happiness is really tough to come by :)

4 & 5. I'm not sure about these. Are we talking this at any particular science/gold %? Or just have a city that can produce that much, given 100% science or gold? If so, I'd think our capital should easily be able to handle that...

6. This is kind of interesting, since you can get culture from libraries/uni's anyway.

Yeah, PA tends to revert the game to a central difficulty. Imagine how much of a pain it would be if you had to sign a PA on Noble... now think what poor Cyrus felt like in VQ06b... ;)

I've always liked the Neil Armstrong qoute:

neil armstrong said:
It suddenly struck me that that tiny pea, pretty and blue, was the Earth. I put up my thumb and shut one eye, and my thumb blotted out the planet Earth. I didn't feel like a giant. I felt very, very small.

VQ08 - Pretty Blue Pea? :)

Armstrong that was a classic statement made by Neil Armstrong I will never forget. I like that name too.

So far we have
NamliaM
Greyfox
Armstrong
Eektor
Scowler
Cosmichail

That's enough to have just one SG - Emporer no PA, as I am sure if there is a SGOTM02 coming it would be nice to have two teams for that.

If everybody is in a agreement I will start a thread later today, towards the evening.

Any input or ideas on the variants is much appreciated. I rarely have played GW and would like to see how he does on Emporer as I have read in other threads he has good traits for this level.

If everybody wants to go random then we'll do it but I am getting bored of Hatty/Cathy.

You could open up the PA option but restrict us from using it. This would allow the AI the option to PA.... and might make us up vs a Emperor&Emperor AI :)

I think we learned from VQ6, that Emperor means war. Early and a lot of it... we need land and lots of it...
