Woman Knocked Unconscious While Shopping

ORANGE CITY, Fla. - A mob of shoppers rushing for a sale on DVD players trampled the first woman in line and knocked her unconscious as they scrambled for the shelves at a Wal-Mart Supercenter.

Patricia VanLester had her eye on a $29 DVD player, but when the siren blared at 6 a.m. Friday announcing the start to the post-Thanksgiving sale, the 41-year-old was knocked to the ground by the frenzy of shoppers behind her.

"She got pushed down, and they walked over her like a herd of elephants," said VanLester's sister, Linda Ellzey. "I told them, `Stop stepping on my sister! She's on the ground!'"

Ellzey said some shoppers tried to help VanLester, and one employee helped Ellzey reach her sister, but most people just continued their rush for deals.

"All they cared about was a stupid DVD player," she said Saturday.

Paramedics called to the store found VanLester unconscious on top of a DVD player, surrounded by shoppers seemingly oblivious to her, said Mark O'Keefe, a spokesman for EVAC Ambulance.

She was flown to Halifax Medical Center in Daytona Beach, where doctors told the family VanLester had a seizure after she was knocked down and would likely remain hospitalized through the weekend, Ellzey said. Hospital officials said Saturday they did not have any information on her condition.

"She's all black and blue," Ellzey said. "Patty doesn't remember anything. She still can't believe it all happened."

Ellzey said Wal-Mart officials called later Friday to ask about her sister, and the store apologized and offered to put a DVD player on hold for her.

Wal-Mart Stores spokeswoman Karen Burk said she had never heard of a such a melee during a sale.

"We are very disappointed this happened," Burk said. "We want her to come back as a shopper."

This is madness. I saw people on TV lined up ouside of a walmart the other day in a line that was like 5 people wide and half a kilometre long. Then when the doors opened people swarmed into the staore as fast as they could as if they were handing out million dollar cheques.

My girlfriend used to work at an electronics store and it was the same thing - she's show up at work on boxing day in the dark and already people were lined up outside the store.

I just can't comprehend how stupid, greedy and brainwashed you have to be to NEED these things so badly that you're willing to do this. I mean I like buying cool stuff and i like bargains but is ANYTHING worth dealing with that? Standing in a line in the cold for HOURS to save under $100??

Madness I tell you.

Oh by the way - it's nice of walmart to "put a DVD player on hold" for her. Isn't that generous of them considering she almost DIED in their friggin store!

I'm not that surprised knowing what kind of people populate the average walmart. I swear, if I was a cop responding to a call like that I would start charging people with attempted murder. Good god, I can see those sweatpants wearing hogs just mesmerized by the chance to get a cheap dvd player. What trash.

WalMart would also be an accomplise to this because it's obvious they didn't provide the security and it's not as if they didn't know it was going to happen.

This is one of those things where I would back a lawsuit.

They should have probably opened at 5 AM like some Jersey stores. There'll be a line, but not enough people would show up so early that something like this would happen at opening.

Good thing I don't bother with these things but if I had to, I'd be fighting back. I'll go up against a crowd. Hell, maybe I'll win, too.

Just your everyday Capitalism. Supply and demand, you know... ;)

Similar and worse things happened here in Germany when a discounter started selling cheap PCs. The day they opened there were lines like you described in front of almost every of their stores.
The funniest/saddest event was in one store where a guy took the last computer just to be forced at gunpoint (!) to give it to another guy. The guy with the gun then paid for it... :crazyeye:

Don't get me wrong - I hate Walmart more than i hate some third world dictators but i wouldn't support a law suit in this case.

People have to take some responsibility for their actions - especially knowing that cheap DVD players are going to cause a mob/cattle mentality. Also judging by the line she would have been standing in it shouldn't take a brain surgeon to understand that conditions might not stay very safe when the doors open.

Ah, you can spread some of the blame around. But, at least get her medical bills paid....

Good thing I've never seen a Walmart store....

Don't you think Walcrap is responsible for protecting their customers from things like this? I certainly do.

No I DO...

I'm just biased today because I'm so fed up with people that stand in lineups for hours in front of department stores to save $50.

kinda sad. I refuse to go anywhere the day after thanksgiving, people seem to just go insane and getting up at 4 am just to go get some sale item that the moment you get into the store there just going to tell you they sold out even though they never had it in at all would just get on my nerves

B'ah, nothing unique to Walmart...

In Singapore, we had people queuing up overnight and trampling each other in a rush to... get this... buy McDonald set meals to get the free dolls that come with them one or two years back. Cheapskates.

The dolls are in pairs, and dressed in costumes of the ethnicities in the region...

 The bastards wouldn't even GIVE her the DVD player. They put it on hold. That's the funniest thing I've seen all day.:rotfl:

Seriously, anyone who would wait in a long line for hours on end just waiting to give someone their business deserves to get trampled. If someone esle had fell instead of her, I'm willing to bet she would have made tracks over the poor dope. I don't really feel sorry for her. They're all a bunch of idiots.

Happy Holidays!:)

This isn't exactly new...but it makes news because it is the start f the season.

Walmart doesn't care, they set their own record by raking in well over $1 billion.

I would hope a little bit of it at least goes for medical expenses. No matter how many times you say "Oh, it's expected." I still think there should have been better security and enforcement. I could expect to be run over by a truck, but if some guy runs a red light, jumps the curb and flattens me, does that mean I'm disqualified from suing because of it?

Walmart leaves a bad stench, both real and metaphorically wherever it goes.

But 29 dollars is pretty tempting.

Cheap, at a cost. This waiting hours in line to make an ass of oneself is a step down from spending a dollar in gas driving out to some place to save a few dollars. What's your time worth?

If you think that this is madness, you haven't seen nothing yet!;) If a giant asteroid is going to hit earth within about 5 hours which would surely wipe out most lifeform on this planet, I'm sure we would see a herd of human stampeding on each other to rob the local bank, market, or whatever they could get their hands on. Human is truely the most savage lifeform I have ever meet; I know this well because I'm human too.:(
