I was looking for a civilization music elimination thread, and couldn't find one, so I decided to start one. +1/-3, like normal. This is the one for the war themes.

Shaka's war theme is ever so glorious, it cries for the blood of my enemies, and being Leroy Jenkins about it too. *laugh*

Rome is, well, bland. I could easily forget it, like right now.

Since Russia got eliminated in Leaderscreens, I`ll give it a deserved boost here. This is one of the few war themes in the game that have lyrics - and rather scary lyrics, I must say. You know sh!t got real when a Russian male choir starts singing like that.

Here are the lyrics. They are abstracts from Pushkin's "The Bronze Horseman" poem and originally described a terrible storm in St. Petersburg. But it fits the war just as well. (Note: the choir fades away a lot, so some lines are probably not in the theme, I`m putting them in parentheses)

City of Peter, just you shine
And stand unshakable as Russia!
(May make a peace with beauty, thine,
The conquered nature’s casual rushes; )
Siege and assault! The evil waters
Thrust into windows, like slaughters.
The mad boats row into a glass.
The stalls are under the wet mass.
The wrecks of huts, the logs, roofs’ pieces,
The stores of the tread, auspicious,
The things, carried the pale want from,
The bridges got away by storm,
The coffins from the graveyards - float,
Along the streets!
The populace
Sees God’s great wrath and waits for death.
All is destroyed: bread and abode.
And how to live?

Hoo boy I was waiting for this topic.

Siam: Boring and I don't like the guy. I often end up waiting for my civ's war theme which is in 90% of the cases better and I dread his stupid, stupid Elephants.

Sweden: It was hard to pick. I like A LOT of the war themes, so my votes will never be the same. It begins with a looming tone, and then the high pitched fiddle instrument (or violin?) plays the same song. It almost come off as an opera, the soldiers heading off to war while their wives sing about the worries of their husbands not coming back. It's quite powerful. And Gustavus is a nice chap (despite not looking like himself) and enjoys a good war. Heck, he's like Harald, but more sophisticated.

Ode to Joy is a great musical piece. This rendition...isn't. It doesn't strike fear in me like it should, being a war theme and all.
+ Indonesia
It sounds mysterious, angry, upbeat, it's got everything I want from a war theme. And it reminds me of Zelda in some way.

Usually I always side with Byzantium, but Mother Russia has overpassed Byzantium with the best war theme and Catherine helps with the moment.

China I would expect something more terrifying from one of the world's superpowers.

China I would expect something more terrifying from one of the world's superpowers.
Here is the problem - there are no famous "terrifying" music pieces in the ancient Chinese culture. There are works with titles that sound like a war theme, but they are performed by a single instrument like pipa or guzheng, so the melodies lack grandness in comparison with the European music performed by a full orchestra (and choir).

They would probably have to compose a Chinese war theme from scratch, but that will break the current pattern of "same base track for both peace and war".

Zulu were a huge let-down. Doesn't sound at all warlike,

The Huns have a theme which tells you that this will be neither a walkover or a crushing defeat; the two of you are about to have a bitter duel to the death.

Shoshone reminds me of an actual war with the Native Americans, unlike the slow-paced theme of the Iroquois. The latter is sinister, I have to admit, but it just doesn't sound like a war theme but rather just some evil plotting theme which I could do without. Shoshone does it right.
