Today the first real highlight of turn based strategy gaming this year has been released: Warlock - Master Of The Arcane.
It's a fantasy strategy game with partially similar mechanics like Civilization. It uses a hex based grid, and besides building up your fantasy army with mages, dwarfes and other creatures, empire management is also an important part. You build cities, improve these cities and the surrounding, conduct diplomacy, and aim to achieve one of four different types of victory.

The game requires a dual core computer with at least 2 GB RAM, a GeForce GT240 and Windows Vista (XP not supported; users note that it still works). A demo can be tested via Steam, which is also used as DRM. The price is 19.99€/$.

Thanks for posting this. I hadn't heard of this game (which I've bought after playing the demo) and when I saw the name of it (only) it wasn't that inspiring (to prompt further "what is this" investigation).

Windows XP may not be listed as supported, but the demo played just fine on my XP machine. Your mileage may vary.

That being said, the price point seems like a steal.

I tried the demo. I didn't like what I saw. It was like a bad copy of Civ 5 and that's saying a lot. I'm going for Fallen Enchantress instead.

This, although
I didn't think Warlock was bad, just not my cup of tea. I'd describe it as someone made a Civ5 mod based on Master of Magic and then rebuilt the engine a little.

It's very cool?

Tried the demo, wasn't bad. Just felt like they could have done more with it. Overall, I'd give it a "avg" rating. Agree with the above though, looking forward to Kael's FE.

I play Warlock for a couple of hours and found it very different with CiV. Its focus is on war, the empire-building is second to directing units in battle-fronts. The pace is faster because of that (I started a war on neutral city on 2nd turn!), and by turn ~150, the game is near completion.

The AI is very capable of mounting defense against my forces. It also does good offensive, eventhough less than its defensive capability. The AI turn is faster than CiV (or Civ4).

Bottomline, I like it :)

Ardania lore is cool but this is like a test-build of a Civ 5 UI.

Interesting feedback from some considering the game really isn't like Civ 5 that much other than hexes and 1upt, which hardly originated with Civ 5. Most strategy games with empire management and war are kind of similar. :p

The game has already been patched and the AI is now much stronger and competitive on offense too, along with the neutrals and random monsters being smarter and stronger.

Yesterday I had the game in my hands and considered to buy it as the price of under 20 EUR was nice. Then I noted, that the game needs Steam and layed it back in the store... -no sale.

I really liked this game, seems like a civ 5 fantasy mod. For those who were disappointed not to having a civ 5 version of Fall from Heaven, I think this is the game you were looking for.

Um, bro? you do realize that it is Kael and co that did FFH, and he's making Fallen Enchantress, not this game right? no offense, but I wouldn't even consider this game in the same league as FFH.

I did try the demo for this, it was nowhere near as good as FFH, and I didnt really enjoy it.

I only got this game to tide me over until G&Ks but i have to say it is brilliant. For me the demo made it look too simple of a game because of the amount of resources you start with you don't really have to think much about what your doing in the 50 turns, however it really shines when you get further through the game and start getting low on your starting resources, there is a lot more management than one would think and you get a true sense of war weariness. I really hope this game does well, it really deserves to be up there will the best of the turn based strategy games.

Another vote from me.

The demo doesn't go as deep into the game. So do not make objective opinions from the demo that came out months ago.

The game is great fun. Recource/Empire managment is very tedius when you go against an AI. Or it decides that you use their oxygen.

Also CIV 5 AI, doesn't even come nowhere near the AI in Warlock.
In comparison the CIV 5 AI is so stupid, that if the Warlock AI was able to play Civ 5, we all outta play in Warlord setting. Is brutal and ruthless.

It resembles me a combination of HMM & CIV.

That's complete nonsense. Most people I know who play Warlock are already playing on the highest difficulty, with map settings that add more AIs than recommended. The latter part doesn't necessarily add difficulty, but it gets you into wars faster, which makes the game more fun because there's not much else to do apart from warring.

Anyway, the claims about Warlock's AI being awesome are highly exaggerated.

Agreed. All i'm seeing is a civ clone who's primary objective seems to be war and I don't see this game for the dove/builder player. Do I think this game is better than Civ V? yes, but to be honest, I"m not really impressed with it. I'll wait for Kael"s FE and give that a go before I decide to invest in this game.

kudos to Kael, I enjoyed FFH more than all my time spent in tbs games put together, but he's got his work cut out for him with elemental: wom v 2.0.

it's already way past overdue and let's be honest, it's wom v 2.0

Warlock on the other hand is $20 well spent, has the fantasy flair with interesting units, 3 factions, customizable leader. I liked it. I shelled out $ for Civ V (very dissapointed) as well as WOM (even more disssapointed) so I got the FE beta for free (needs a lot of work).
